Ford Explorers and SPL?

It seems explorers are a popular choice for competing in SPL, certainly overshadowed by the CRX but still popular by the looks of it...

I have heard the 2nd gen 4 doors are the best for SPL (coincidentally the one I have) and am wondering why.

Angle of windshield? Distance from subs to windshield? What exactly is the benefit in these vehicles?

I have 4 12" (above windowline) right now in mine and I was thinking about using the truck for competitions when I do my next install.

I would like to have dual alternators. I already have a 200a alt in stock position, and I want to add a 280-300a for the Memphis 4kw(s) @ ~17v

I'd also like to do a wall.

If I were to build within the regulations for a certain class, which would my vehicle do best in given my preferences thus far? I would want to compete playing music, not interested in pure SPL with tones.

Any advice greatly appreciated! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I have a 98 Explorer and I've looked and I don't think there is a dual-bracket option. Do you see how tight it is in there now? No where for another alt to go. I've run like 20-30 different setups in my x and they all get loud but none got low. (Loudest 146-7 @ 47 Hz). Anybody else dealing with this? I had a friend down the street had an Expedition and I would sometime put my gear in his truck, and the lowness of the bass was unbelievable. They sounded completely different. My next truck is gonna be an Expedition.

i know its tight in there by the factory alt, but the alts dont have to be right next to each other. theres room on the drivers side of the engine.

all of my setups have gotten really low in my truck, so i dont know.

Here is the scoop on the exploder. The smalll dash and the lack of a large angle in the windshield help the explorer put up nice #'s on the TL sensor. In general most of the 2nd gens like 49-52hz for a peak frequency. Small boxes work very well in the cargo area, most of them like the box on the pasenger side with a port firing to the rear or the driver side. You can expect to break a 150 on 2- 10's or 12's with as little as 2500 watts.

The bad thing about explorers is they tend to break the roof braces from the constant flexing, and the back door linkage will give you some problems after beating on it for a while.

Mine has the 5.0 and i dont see putting a dual alt setup on it. I suggest just upgrading the stock alt with a nice battery bank.

Not to get off topic... but what is with the Pyramid banner in your sig? Maybe something i dont know? lol.

Even if removing a/c do you guys still think there would be trouble fitting the second alt? I know there are ex's with dual alt I just can't find pics!

Edit: I have the 5.0 also

I just got my 4 12"s in a couple days ago and im hitting the lows reallllll good.

may be the boxy desighn of explorers, i have one and everything sounds better in my car then anyone elses, unless they have a suv of course, i mean you put 2 12's in a truck under the seats then the same 2 in my car itll sound better, even with same box. you know a friend of mine has the slim line 13 1/2 jl, i think its liek the tw5 or somethin like that, it was 500 dollars. he has it in a 2 seater ranger and it sounds about the best your gunna get for a truck thats that small, the box is fiberglass and was made by local car audio shop. any way i took his sub out and put it in the back of my explorer and **** did it sound a hell of alot better, that little thing has some power, i was suprised, i could imagine how it would sound in a bigger box

Yeah they're loud, here's a 154 @ the head rest. Probably does another 2-3 dB's in the kick.

Crazy setup man, is that just a cylindrical ported enclosure or is it some type of bandpass? Haven't seen anything quite like that before. I snapped a few pictures just now of my temp. setup, sounds great though. excuse the lack of rear interior panels!

Memphis 4kw 2000w @ 2ohm, Memphis 300/4 M class for the mids/highs. Kinetik 2000 and the subs are RD "Classic" 12's. Box is ~12cu ft @ 35hz (Still needs double baffle!!). Been told these subs like a little less port area than usual so they have about 65sq in. Optima Yellowtop up front, KnuKonceptz HO alt, alpine 9887 for headunit.

Still got to get it metered though...
