For those going active.

I've heard that they can play low but honestly on moderate to loud volumes I would definitely be worried about crossing them that low. If the XXX mids don't play high enough for you then a midrange speaker is probably your best bet.

i think i've read that they can do up to about 1200khz fine. could be wrong tho. i have some on the way right now.
1800hz 4th order is as low as I would go and expect any real volume out of them without the distortion creeping up. I read that someone succesfully mated the RS tweeter with the 10" rs woofer at ~1400hz but that was with a cauer-elliptical filter and they said that it works fine with moderate listening levels.

so basically at this point, i'm looking at horns instead of tweeters then?

Why?

Quite a few people have run the mids with regular tweets.

Can you get horns in your car? **** man, I remember not too long ago, you didnt even want to cut your door panels......... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif :D

get better range for the highs. idk. i hear alot of different things about how high they can play without breakup, etc. i just want some opinions before i waste money on something i can't use/won't like.

and horns would mount under the dash iirc anyways.. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

hell i may do kicks anyways. not sure.

I ran my Lotus Ref tweets at 1.6k for awhile, but bumped them up as I shifted them around to different locations. Too low of a x-over in my car lowers the stage too far. Maybe start your tweeter HP at 2x the Fs?

Foxpro5 raises another good point; depending on mounting locations that low a frequency can pull your stage down. Again it depends on mounting locations, frequency response, relections and so on. Since you already have the rs tweeters on the way I say try them. I would start them at 1.6 k at say a 12 db slope and run the mids up to 1.5-1.6 k at a 24 db slope. Play with the frequencies and cut offs from that point to where it sounds good to your ear. Bottom line is that you have to listen to it, if you are happy with the way it sounds it really doesn't matter what anyone says. Now if you play with them and are not happy then it's time to look at some other options.

I'm am planning on changing my system to run active. I figure i'd give it a try since i have a 9835 and capable to. What I want to know is that crossover points you most of you guys use when going active. Or would all that depend on the tweeters and mids.

i have set of Arc Kar 265, and a set of Memphis mcsync 6.5". I have two 2 channel amps. would it be okay if i ran the tweets off of one amp and the mids off of the other. i.e. right mids of arc's and memphis on the right channel and the lefts on the left channel and the same goes for the tweeters. would that be okay?
It's usually better to have the mids on one amp and the tweets on the other amp only because the mids and tweets will perform optimally under different power requirements (i.e. my tweets are 100 rms while my mids are 200 rms). With a 4 channel amp, you can always adjust the gains seperately...but even then, there's only so much you can do.

With a dedicated two channel amp for the mids and another one for the tweets, you can match them up exactly so that they perform optimally. For example, i'd get a Nine.2 (100 X 2) for my tweets and a Nine.2X (200 X 2) for my mids for the best possible sound. I can then adjust the gains seperately for each amp since I won't be using a crossover with a tweeter protection circuit.....this will also help me tone down the harshness of the tweets.

The crossover points depend on the comps.....with my cdt's, the mids got really high (~3Khz easily), so that allowed me to crossover my tweets much higher and turn the gains up a little higher. The lower you tune the tweets and mids, the more you have to watch for distortion. On the same note, my current mids get extremely low...i have them crossed over at 73 HZ although they can play down to 60 HZ with ease (depending on the type of music....rap usually has a higher dbrecording for bass...so it prevents me from leaving the mids that low).

Those are just my 2 cents...but i don't have that much experience with different comps (only with CDT's and OZ audio).

Exactly... and you probably change those points at least 800 times //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif I swear I can adjust my x-over driving down the highway, talking on my phone while eating a sub sandwich!! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Actually I really don't change my points anymore. I have two settings now, one for pure sq and the other is my daily listening. The sq setting is for when my car is off and parked; the other setting is for my daily commute which requires things to be turned up quite a bit to compensate for road noise and such.
