For the last time, PLEASE: clipping does NOT blow speakers/subwoofers

if you think clipping kills speakers, think of taking a 50 watt amp, turning its gain all the way up and hooking it up to a 2006 RE XXX

you think that amp will smoke the XXX

overdriving a speaker, either mechanically or thermally, can kill a speaker

the problem is, people clip their amps and fry their speaker and think that it was the clipping that fried the sub but they dont realize that a 500 watt amp at full clipping is LIKE putting out as much as 1000 watts. so it is possible to fry a 700 watt sub with a 500 watt amp but you cant fry a 700 watt sub with a 250 watt amp

Cant we just leave it at "clipping can easily be a major contributor to over driving your speakers thermally"?

It seems odd to me that so many people are willing to accept the leap in logic that brings them to say under powering subs can blow them, but we cant say clipping will around here.

wait... if underpowering speakers makes them blow , that would mean if youd fed it its rated power , itll ****ing blow up.

logic > people.

almost every speaker ive owned has been underpowered. i kinda prefer it that way...

he's sayin that using a lower powered amp but driving it into clipping can cause the damage to the speaker. running RMS wattage without clipping will not blow (cause thermal damage, mechanical damage, whatever you want to call it) it. whats hard to understand?

moral of the story.... buy quality amps and quality subs. and learn how to use your stuff.

So is it safe to get a little phantom power from clipping? I remember back in the day I had this cheap *** Visonik amp that really got down low & gladly powered up anything I hooked up to it. It was like a 200W amp though

Not been in this conversation, but clipping, with a non-sinusoidal wave form, would imitate a DC power source at the top of each curve for moments at a time. My take on it - however, I'm only working with a high school education and basic logic.

But, we know what a DC power source can do for your subs. Doesn't help it out much :p

I like this thread.

and I have a real question to ask you guys about a clipped signal.

letts say just for fun here, I was running a 25% clipped signal. meaning 75% of it was still in the safe zone, but it would want to travel 25% more but cant, so would flatline for 25% of its stroke on the wave length. now my question is.....

if the sub would push out letts say 10mm of mechanical throw on a full on un clipped signal, would the sub end up pushing out 12mm or so when sending it a 25% clipped signal ?

because I woud think it would have some sort of "ramp effect"

ride a bike over a hill with nice speed. smooth. no jump = un clipped signal

ride a bike over a table top with a ramp faced lip = air time above the ramp. = clipped signal

so this same idea about mass + momentum would lead me to believe that sending a clipped signal would definately cause exessive mechanical throw of a sub. wich all subs are not capable of handling. - or impropper sized box / tuning can also add complexity to this.

but am I right in thinking a sub that will play to its safe limit clean moving 10mm out

would try and move closer to 12+mm when recieving a clipped signal ?

All I know is...my nuts itch.... brb.
This happens to me a lot. It seems whenever I walk into a big store with a lot of people, my balls want to stick to my leg. I end up having to kick my leg while stepping in an attempt to get my balls to un-stick. Anyone else share this experience?

Woofers can blow, this much we know.

throw some cornstarch or baby powder there
