For the last time, PLEASE: clipping does NOT blow speakers/subwoofers

I think this is more semantical than anything else. Waveform shape change is 100% what clipping is; the transformation of the sinusoidal wave. Without it, there wouldn't be more power.

Squeak, now do you see why I just wanted it to die? People are just making this shit more complicated than it is. To recap: excessive power that causes a speaker to continually exceed either Xmech or Pe will cause a speaker to fail. Because clipping can cause this excessive power is irrelevant, because numerous other things could be the cause.
Well shit. I just jumped into a learning hole. Been reading from the start. Sorry to have posted without reading all the way threw. Apologies.

:laugh:What are you apologizing for? This is caraudio.com; nothing here is ever serious.

If you clip the shit out of your inputs to the amp, how much does this effect the output assuming output was set without clipping? Will it then clip the outputs as well? Or will it be more likely to clip the outputs?
Depends on the level of the input signal. If the input signal is fully clipped and at the same peak level as the gains were set with, the result would be pretty much the same as clipping the output. If the level is lower than that the result will be a squared off output from the amp but at less than full power. Music has spots like that in it by design i.e. tube amps on the guitars in the studio maxed into a nice hard clip on purpose.

in the above case of clipping the input, the key is that the active lowpass filter would still work fine. as such, the square edges would be largely removed. this doesn't mean that this magically removes clipping. You still have a high degree of compression, and possibly poor harmonic balance.

Thanks to both of you guys. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

At this point everyone should be asking themselves how much 'excessive' power can really be generated by clipping an amplifier.....

Anecdotally, a frind of mine had some JLW3's... used them daily for several years.... untill he went on a road trip and blew them up after 4 hours of otherwise regular use....

road trips blow speakers.... And that is a fact !
