first time installer - advice needed

Last week I decided I'd finally get down to installing a cd player from my old car into my current car. The current car is a 2000 Mazda 626 LX. The head unit is an aftermarket and was installed in the other car professionally. This time around I decided I'd like to gain the knowledge of installing the head unit myself, for future builds and to save a bit of money.

I couldn't manage to locate the correct wiring harness I needed to just plug & play into the Mazda in any local parts/ audio stores (kind of shocked me). So I began doing online searches for the wiring diagrams for both my head unit (JVC KD-S26, nothing special but it works) and the Mazda itself. I quickly found a .pdf file of the original installation instructions for the head unit. The wiring diagram for the Mazda, however, was a totally different story. After doing a bit of research, and verifying the wires the best I could, I found a diagram for the Mazda, downside being that it was for speaker installation and only listed the speaker wire colors.

So last night I went out and did my splices for all the speakers, everything went fine. I took a list of the leftover wires from both the harness that plugs into the head unit, and the wires leftover in the car. Did some searching all day while I was at work and just kept being thrown in circles as to what the wires may be for, which is why I am here now.

Below I will list the wires leftover from both the head unit and the car itself. If anyone could please give me a confident answer or suggestion on what should be spliced together, it would be greatly appreciated.

Leftover from Car:

Blue with White stripe

Blue with Red stripe

Red

Black

Yellow

Gray

And, a larger all black wire with an oversized headphone jack looking male connector (fits perfectly into the 'antenna' port on head unit, not sure if this is correct wire though)

Leftover from cd player:

Blue with White stripe

Red

Black

Yellow

Also, is there anything I should know as far as things not to do while trying to install? ex: Splicing and plugging with the negative battery terminal still attached (Did this on lunch break today and fairly certain it is the cause for the blown fuse I just replaced :p)

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. And in your response remember, this is my first attempt at wiring inside of a car, so please be more constructive with your responses and less cruel. I'm fairly certain someone will post "Just take it to a professional", I will probably ignore this because I would really like to have the knowledge for myself for the future, even if the learning process does get a bit sticky.

Just ran through the list I made of my speaker wire colors, and none of them match what you have posted here. Is it possible that the diagram you found is for another stock system? like a Bose or something? Kind of explains to me why you have listed a red/black illumination wire, when i have no red/black wire, and explains why you don't list a Gray or a Red wire, like I have.

If I were u I would go back and rewire the factory harness back together and order the $6 part that u need so you can have your HU wrking or you can just keep pissing in the wind and hope you can figure it out. Will take 2-3days to get the correct part but I bet you will end up messing around alot longer trying to figure out how to rig it up without it. Just my 2 cents.

Ok, if I were to do that, how do I rewire the factory harness? If worse comes to worse I'll do that, I did keep the connectors that came off the car and head unit. But I don't know how I would get the cut wires out of the connector and plug the run wires into it.

I'm guessing you cut right at the plug, leaving no room to splice stuff back together?
Indeed I did, wanted to give myself as much room to work with the wires as possible, considering they all bunch into 1 bundle just a few inches back from the connector.

Could have got a harness from walmart for 10 bucks...
I think he gets the point guys.

OP, keep_hope_alive seems to have given you a fairly detailed line up of what to wire where, may as well go ahead instead of trying to re wire the factory harness.
