first time cd player install help

ok have saturn sc2 1997, knob on player is loose and there is a really bad buzzing noise that comes and goes, my son gave me a cd player that he took out of his car, i guess i first have to remove the old, so how do i do that without tearing up the whole dash? tips on removing??? before i start this just thought i would ask if the cd player that came with the saturn can be fixed ? i mean is that a major job or something i can try and do. should i just try and install the new one? never tried a car stero install before so i will apoligize now if any of this sounds stupid, thanks

Just go buy a cheapie from bestbuy or something. They usually do free installation with purchase. And they'll know what to do as far as removing the old unit goes.

Its not worth fixing the stock one.

how nice is the one you have, ex. model, brand ect. it might be a nice cd player worth keeping. my dad bought an el cheapo and it was worthless. it skipped every quarter mile. you will have to remove the part of the dash where the cd player is. i find that removing the dash is the hardest part. the wiring is simple if your not color blind

A 97 Saturn is very easy if you have the correct parts. The shroud around the head unit and AC controls has to come off first. Look on each side; you'll see a little push-pin fastener. Pop the center pin in and you can pull the fastener out. After that, the whole shroud lifts off; you'll need to disconnect the harness from the defrost switch.

With the shroud gone, you'll be able to find the two screws at the top of the head unit that hold it in. Remove the screws, pull the head unit/pocket assembly out, unplug the antenna and the wire harness.

You'll need a mounting kit made for the 96-99 Saturn (not the standard GM kit), a GM antenna adapter and GM wire harness. The harness and adapter can be found about anywhere but you might have to go to a car audio shop for the kit. Just follow the directions and you should be fine.

One of the benefits of buying a Metra dash kit is that you get nice easy to understand Metra instructions and accompanying illustrations to show you how to remove your old unit and install the kit. I would also reccomend a wire harness adaptor if you haven't done this before. With those two parts everything will be nice and simple (you do need an antenna adaptor)
