First time box buider question

Let me expain this.

I used to have 2 memphis studio 12''s in ported box, and it got pretty loud. the ports were 3.5x3.5 inches square and they were like 8 1/2 inches deep. not sure what that was tuned to but whatever. I upgraded to a treo 15 SSI DVC and i had a box built. The box is kinda small, its like 3 cubes ported, and it slams but heres my question.

The box that the memphis's were in is alot bigger, like 4.8 cubes total. If I built the box with the same L W H as the memphis box that held the 2 12''s and just tune the port to a lower freq (its at 36 now).. would it pound alot harder? Would this be a waste of time..? any help is greatly appreciated. thanks alot!
