First Sub Build - SQ Oriented

The Shocker Super Extreme coils I have are only really suited to 800W continuous, though possibly not so much. The ones I've sold to guys on here have a different TC coil which holds a bit more power.
Copper is best for music since it's heavier and is better for continuous power handling. Soft suspension is your friend. Pierce Audio has a decent medium stiff spider, a single one of those would be good. I have used softer ones in the past, but don't have access to them anymore as all I've had were new old stock from a company that's gone the way of the dodo bird.

Exotic baskets are nice, but expensive and 10" spiders are about 2 or 3 times the cost of 8" spiders and harder to find.

I have a couple nice 10" cones here. Some 10" cones you'll find sit too deep on a standard basket to mate nicely with the top landing so you need either a special basket or 7.25" spider to sit on the next lower landing... or just be aware that you get a 10" cone that mates to the right landing for you.

I haven't built any 10's with the TC9 motor yet so I can't really comment much on what combinations get what specs, but it's a really good platform and the 12's and 15's I've made model fairly well sealed. IMO TC9 is one of the best all-around motors out there.
I'm convinced on the TC9 motor and sticking with 10's. You brought up a good point I hadn't thought of........how will I get the parameters to model a box?

I have wanted to build my own subs for awhile. I just never got the funds or enough ambition. I will be watching this thread closely.
I guess we will learn together!

Can also consider XBL^2 based motors.
What are some brands/types of motors with XBL type motors? Are they good in the 600w RMS range too?

I'm still into the TC stuff. What do you like about XBL motors or brands above a TC9 motor?

If you're going to build woofers you should invest in Dayton WT3. OR if you have a test bench set up you can find parameters long-hand with an amp, some test tones, a good DMM, and either a couple pounds of weights (of a known mass) or a sealed box of a known volume. It's tedius, is a bit of math, but can be done with good accuracy.

XBL^2 is a split gap technology (similar concept to LMS, where the ammount of coil in the gap at any excursion is the same to keep linear BL).... though I think they use dual gaps as well. These and LMS are great technologies, but good luck finding coils.

TC9 can be had for reasonable price, coils will be easy to come by (and a good variety should fit), and you can get an acceptably good sounding sub, and enough motor force to throw around somewhat heavy softparts.

TC9 for sure. Thanks.

I'll hunt down 2-TC9 motors and baskets, then I'll be back with an update and more questions.

Anyone reading this have a couple TC9 motors to sell? Looking for other parts too......//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Those are the baskets I'm looking at......I don't have a "parts guy", I'm just hunting classifieds. Since I'm totally a newb, I'm bouncing ideas off all that will help. Hispls and yourself have been helping the most. Do you have parts or know someone with lots of stuff around? If so, please share. Thanks!

yes i have parts lot of them.

im glad to help you with whatever you need if you get parts from me or not //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
