First Fiberglassing Project EVER....Kicks

Got em wrapped, gonna glass em tomorrow. Do I have to put Fiberglass matt on top of this first. The material is just like mesh speaker grill material, so I dont know of that will be strong enough.

Resin (w/hardner) that Sh!t now!....Better to get that part done right now, let it dry over night, and then apply the mat tommorow

and use LOTS AND LOTS of resin

Yea, cover it with resin....let it dry and harden, after it hardens, Put mat on it....you know how to put mat on it?..... take a peice, lay it on the Kick, then take a paint brush, dip it in resin and jab at the Mat, untill its soaked with resin (translucent almost) and continue to do so all around the kick, until you have as many layers you want... 2 or 3 layers is all you really need for Kicks

Also i have found that it is better to do one layer, let it dry and do another layer, its easir to spot the bubbles that way. Glassing is all about patience, sanding and more sanding...

And more sanding..

imo, id get it all done, sand the sides down smooth, and see if it flexes. id pour some resin on the inside - maybe try and put some matte down on the inside, and see if it flexes. if it still flexes, get some nice thin (like 3~6oz) WEAVE cloth, and first coat the pod with resin, lay the cloth down, then cover that with resin until it becomes translucent.

do that wherever the panel flexes. but you dont need it to withstand TONS of pressure, because tis just a 6.5" speaker at most right?

id be more worried about somone actually kicking or steping on it while entering the car than it not being strong enough for the speaker //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

If you regularly fiberglass something 2-3 layers you should be fine, it shouldnt flex after that much at all, I can stand (180 pounds) on my Kicks, and they're only 2-3 layers

i did a pair of kicks with just one layer of fleece, and then i poured resin inside.

i had to bash them with a sledgehammer to get the tweeters out.

it was NOT easy. so yes. i think kicks can be remarkably strong with just a little material, because they are so small.

I would actually recommend just sanding down the kicks and then pouring a 50/50 mix of resin and body filler over the kicks. This will fill in the majority of the dips and pits, plus it will be much easier to sand and paint. That will give you the extra stength you need PLUS give you a much easier working surface.
