Hello All. This is my first post - be easy, i'm a virgin //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I want to use what i have layin round to save $$$. It'll be good enough for me, not trying to win any comp's here. Just wanna blast some tool. I have an idea in my head that could turn out sweet, i just need a little help.

Equip:

(2) JL 12w3-D2

(2) MBQuart PCE 216

(1) Crossfire TEK 150.2

(1) Crossfire TEK 50.4

(1) xtant 301a

Questions:

  • Does this sound right...Use the 150.2 for the subs, the 50.4 for the quarts, and sell the xtant on ebay? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
  • Can the JL's be used Free-Air?
  • Where is a good place to get Damplifier and other sound deadening at a good price?
  • How about Fibreglass supplies? Lowe's maybe?

I've looked around the site and it seems to be one of the best around. I admit i don't know much right now but i learn fast.

Thanks

I would e-mail Rick from raamaudio.com for some RAAMmat BXT and Ensolite (closed-cell foam). He is a great guy to do business with and his products are top quality. Just to the research on deadner, best bang for the buck. I personally bought my fiberglassing supplies from Wal-mart, but i spent more than if I would have bought in large quantities from like a boat repair shop. Sorry cant help you on your future audio components.

I don't think you can use the JL as a free air sub, but you can check out their website to be sure.
The manual only lists two recommendations, enclosed and ported. But it has the following listed as a specification:

Free Air Resonance (Fs): 24.3 Hz

That really doesn't help me answer the question though does it? That just tells me the frequency that it resonates in free air right? I told you all i am learning here, not being a smart azz.

I am going to assume i need to make an enclosure unless someone knows for sure i can do it.

Fs - Driver free air resonance, in Hz. This is the point at which driver impedance is maximum. "This parameter is the free-air resonant frequency of a speaker. Simply stated, it is the point at which the weight of the moving parts of the speaker becomes balanced with the force of the speaker suspension when in motion. If you've ever seen a piece of string start humming uncontrollably in the wind, you have seen the effect of reaching a resonant frequency. It is important to know this information so that you can prevent your enclosure from 'ringing'. With a loudspeaker, the mass of the moving parts, and the stiffness of the suspension (surround and spider) are the key elements that affect the resonant frequency. As a general rule of thumb, a lower Fs indicates a woofer that would be better for low-frequency reproduction than a woofer with a higher Fs. This is not always the case though, because other parameters affect the ultimate performance as well."

Those JL's aren't free-air subs, they'll want a box of some sort.
Lowes/Home Depot have fiberglass stuff.

The rest sounds like it would work fairly well.
Thanks. Means i have more work than first thought. But also mean it can look that much better. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Thanks everyone, that should be all i need for now.

W3's do not do good free air - lol i had 4 12' W7 each running off a JL 1000/1 free air and it sounded great - just not loud at all - you need a box for the W3's to amplify - you need the back pressure on the sub - otherwise they tap out
