f*ckin auto shops.

Dude, you don't have a Midas shop anywhere? My dad has worked on many Jetta's and changed out the alternator many a time. Hell I have been there just BSing him while he was doing this on a Jetta. He charges by the hour too, but that price is crazy!

And Atoz is right, the alty you would buy would have their own warranty and the work that they do should be warrentied. Sounds to me like they are taking you for a ride and your ******* it up and trying to vent here, understandable. Should try and do it yourself mang. Would hate to see anybody get slammed for that price.

Hell most aftermarket alty's are like 400 or so.....Wish I was closer, I have changed out a few in my day............but no Jetta's. I have done it on a Nissan 300zx TT, which was a blast!

you guys are relentless

dont worry , i got it all figured out.

My roomie apparently go this alty changed there, they quoted him the exact same price.

His padre is a lawyer and did some chit-chatting with them about something, got them to drop it to $300 all said and done for a battery and alternator, installed.

I'll get it figured out tomorrow.

Relaced the alt in my 318i took about 3~ hrs (no idea what i was doing)

Cost 140~ but now i can replace it in a jiff! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

300 is pretty good for a batt alt and install

Guys he just wants to ***** about the cost, he was looking for people to validate his anger. He wasn't looking for real solutions like doing it himself. He obviously doesn't WANT to, he'd rather pay the money (since it's not his anyways) and ***** than to do it and feel good in the reward of having saved the money.

This scenario is exactly why I almost never go to a real mechanic shop if I can possibly avoid it. Because they not only inflate their own worth (really? $75 ****ing dollars an hour???), then they inflate the job (how many hours?) on top of it. Shadetree mechanics can do just as good work in less time with less cost 95% of the time. Hell, sometimes better, as I can't tell you how many times I've had my car muddied, scratched, smoked up, stereo settings ****ed with or otherwise ****ed up at the "real" mechanic's shop, but the shadetree guys have almost always taken better car of my shit.
