Long story short, its gonna cost $750 to replace the alternator in my girlfriends car. I would do it, but i dont have time with school at the moment, and we want to get the car sold so we need to get it fixed.

They claim that the replacement 120amp alternator will cost them $400, that labor will be 2.7 hours, and that it will require $50 in extra supplies.

F*ckin bastards, its the only place in town that will work on imports //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/mad.gif.c18f003ab0ef8a0d9c27ca78d77a6392.gif

This is in a 1999.5 jetta

Had to vent somewhere.

most alts take about 30 minutes to install

look at it and see if it is just the basic 4 bolts and then the connections and see if there is room to do it

if u can id save the extra money and do it your self

wow dude thats ridiculous. Took a few minutes to slap a new alt in my '73 duster. Its alot easier to work with than new cars, but still.

swapping the alternator is the easy part. The issue with her car is the easiest way to access the alternator is by underneath it. I dont have jackstands, or anything else ot lift the car with, and i dont have time ot deal with it right now.

I went and tried talking them down for about 30 minutes, but they obviously knew exactly what they were doing. Only shop around that works on imports.

if it is the engine in the pic, it should be no problem.... loosen the tensioner pulley, remove belt from alternator, remove plugs, screws and bolt up the new one...

you do not have to take the whole bumper off, i talked to the mechanic himself. I told him to look me in the eye and tell me that it would take him 2.7 hours to swap the alternator.

he looked away and said "probably about two", but they refused to change the quote.

If i was to buy my own alternator, all warranty whatnot is void on the car, so thats out of the question.
