anyone here experimented with differing materials for boxes?

my friends and i have mostly done the tradition route of mdf and fiberboard for temp boxes and now have all built corian ones.

im curious as if theres anyone else trying other stuff (granite or even marble perhaps?)

and for those who are wondering, the corian sounds leaps and bounds better than mdf although it needs a small amount of deadening, polyfill or fat/dynamat etc to take a little of the resonance out.

I use Carbon Fiber for my Sub boxs and speakers backing plates. Its the same as 1.5" MDF but light.

You could hit it with 50lb hammer and it wouldn't even snizz.

I use Polyfill in all my Enclosers.

cool but I was expecting the whole thing to be made of marble //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif
Thats my next project.....oops did I say that out loud //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif

one of the problems with marble is that you cant bond joints very well with it and expect them to be load handling and air tight, so you have to have some supporting structure outside of it and seal that accordingly. So im going to try some cast marbling instead, which is a bastard mix of polyurathane resin and calcium carbonate / marble dust. Im sure it will be nice and messy to work with //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Lucikly I have a marble shop down the street from my house, so i'll be trying out some things with them....they've got a bunch of different flavors over there, from gypsum based to onyx blend cast stuff. Ive got some black test peices already that are pretty cool looking...ya know black with the white veins thru it.

thing is, doing R&D stuff like this for box building can be costly and time consuming, and sometimes its just not worth the hassle. So we'll see how it goes, the first marble box I did was a pretty good success (at least the termlab agress with me on that one //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif)
