Everyones Input Wanted!!

First off, don't carry a lot of competing products, doesn't help a **** thing when you have 4 different $600 1000watt amps. Keep it simple in the beginning (not going to be easy since most opening orders are huge).

You should refinately have ONE big name for recognition (Alpine, JL Audio, Rockford), not everyone that walks in the store will know about car audio and with lesser known names, the sale won't be easy. You can also use the bigger name brand to sell off of if necessary "This Memphis 1000D makes 1100 watts at 1 ohm and costs $600 versus JL Audio's 1000/1 that costs $900".

As much high end stuff you may want, you will need 10x more low end product. How many $1000 amps, $600 headunits, $800 speakers, and $1000 subs do you think you will sell? Maybe keep a few for show, and again, to sell off of, but nothing major (unless you are going for a high end shop only).

Be prepared to shell out some dough every quarter to keep minimum orders for each line, this isn't an easy business, and its not exactly booming.

Also, remember one thing, its not what you like, its what people buy. Sony Xplod or Audiobahn may not be what you want, but if thats what sells in your market, it really wouldn't hurt to carry it.

This is also where I normally mention in these threads that the shop that is always the most busy in my area is the shop no one would suspect.....the shop that primarily carries the low end gear (Crunch, Pyramid, Digital Audio, etc....entry level, low end products) and isn't too great with installations. Why? Because those are the products that sell well in my area.

This goes back into understanding what products will and won't do well in your market area. And that isn't something we can decide for you.

You need a good balance. You have to find out what your customers want, what they can afford, and how they are going to treat their equipment. I'd sugguest getting with all the big companies: Pioneer, DEI, RF, etc so you can offer the popular stuff, then stock up on stuff a little less known and a little higher quality. Entry level IA, RE, and AA subwoofers would be a good bet IMO.

Like, the biggest seller in this area is the 1200 watt Lanzar amps, the 1200 watt Visonik amps, and some older subs of Volfenhag's higher/est line. The reason is because people like cheap power and subs you can abuse to no end. (That's why I recomended IA)

Sell stuff no one else does! There is nothing more boring than going into ANOTHER audio shop with the same crap you can order off of ebay. There is a custom shop in Tennesee that I stopped by once, called Clear Sound that PRIDED themselves on selling stuff that other shops didnt. Now thats thinkn' //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/veryhappy.gif.fec4fed33b4a1279cf10bdd45a039dae.gif

Very smart, Im glad to see others think like me. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Not pushin the Squeakinators huh?

Squeakinators have to be built by hand, by master blacksmith Dwarves who've practiced the trade of making Squeakinators for hundreds of generations. Out of every 10,000 made, only 1 will live up to the quality standards needed to be a Squeakinator. The others are thrown into the Volcano of Squeak, after the first cast the metal is no longer good enough to fit the bill. The rare diamond cloth that makes up the phase plug, however, is saved. Only 3 phase plugs exist and Squeak himself has two of them.

They take too long to build to be sold in a store. ='(

You've got to see what kind of demographic you are dealing with.

Like others have implied...you can carry all the best names- Zapco, Eclipse, Arc Audio, etc.- but if you are in a depressed economic area...you won't sell much at all.

Determine what your demographic is...see if you can talk to other shop owners, and see what their big sellers are (not necessarily brands, but at what price range?). See if other shops focus strictly on installation and minimize overhead, or are more product-oriented and stock the crap outta their shop.

At the same time, you want to distance yourself from the competition- what's going to make people want to go to your shop?

You definitely want to carry some of the big names- Alpine, Pioneer, MTX, Kicker, etc. You'll also want some gear that the 5 closest shops don't sell as well.

The problem with selling those brands is that the type of bulk purchasing power Circuit city/best buy has he will never be able to compete.

Nowaday the way to survive is offering the solid midstream products like Memphis, Rockford, Kicker...thow in Crossfire on the cheaper end and maybe access to Fusion for some variety....JL does well.....all companies offering amps, coaxes + comps, and subs....

Very hard to carry all the boutique/ high end products and have them sitting in a display starting up a shop...you'd need some good capital and be ready to ride out the storm....walk ins rarely come with the big bucks or buy brands they hardly heard of...

And I wanted to place a **** order !!!
