Dumb question... good sound but not obnoxious

This is my first foray into subs (other than a bazooka tube). I want some bass but not obnoxious bass.... I don't want people to hear me turning onto the street. What do you recommend? Can I get a good sub and amp adjust the power on the amp? Working blind here... no amp currently. Then if I want to really push it turn it up?

Sorry for another noob questions but was not sure what to search on and got tired of looking when I got 12 pages in and no references.

What's your budget?

If you don't want something obnoxiously loud, I'd go for either a good, "high output" 8" or a mid-line 10". There is no DUMB question....If you dont know, you dont know...Thats why this is here...I bet you'll end up getting a louder system..You'll start low then want more and more....LOL

sounds like youre after sound quality... you want full clear bass but nto overpowering your music.

there are PLENTY of people here to help you out in that subject.. but like squeak siad we need a budget. and how much space are you willing to give up.

Funny, were in the same boat. I too wanted to add bass to my truck and like you noting obscene. Knowing nothing about amp/sub combo’s I did a search and kind of found out what everyone liked and disliked. I got the following steals from ebay.

New Audiobanh AW1000Q in a Q-logic box for $61 shipped.

New Profile CA400M amp (just for the sub) for $52 shipped.

I know everyone hates the sub but buddy of mine is running two of them and they really bump. And if it’s really as bad as people say I’ll just replace it. I figure the $61 I spent was for the box. I’m only looking for ¼ of what he is putting out. I took the recommendation on the amp from people here and I think this setup will be good enough for me. Keep your eyes open and you’ll find some pretty good deals.

Hey guys...sorry, went to grab some lunch. I wanted to stay around $300 max but if I can keep it under even better, but I don't want to just settle for crap either... I spend lots of time in my car and love music, so it is kinda important to sound good. It will be for the back of my 94 Chev S-10 Blazer. I already have 4 6x9's in a box and sound ok but I want to add a 4 channel amp to them to give them more than the 18 RMS out of my Alpine HU. Probably go with a Profile 4-Channel on that ($90) so that leaves me around $210 for a sub and amp.

1 kicker cvr 10 0r 12 match it up with another profile amp should be plenty fine

yeah warranties make life sooo much easier. This probably sounds redundant on this site, but I just got done installing one in my car minutes ago, and already put one in my friends car. RE RE 12. Great output for the price, won't take up much in a sealed box, and still produce great sound. Also, at 150 RMS, you will not have to spend much at all for an amp.

I'd check into the Soundsplinter RL-i, Resonant Engineering SE, Oz Audio Matrix Elite, Image Dynamics IDQ and IDMAX, Ascendant Audio Atlas, Elemental Designs Kv.2, Diamond Audio D6, Alpine Type-R, and...that's all I can think of off the top of my head.
