i would put them along the edges of the sub. (imagine if the mdf wasn't there the 2x2's would support it) the other thing to remember is anything you put in the box you need to account for it's displacement. not quite sure of the intentions of this box, but if it's for daily listening, then just do the 2x2's or a double baffle, the rest would be unecessary.

ok so i would cut about four 2x2 and make sort of a square around the rim of the woofer? or just two on the sides?

no. full length of the box and on 2 sides of the sub.

DB, wooden dowel rods are easy to put in.
