dog training help

Good question. What I want to know is how do you make your dog stick by you when off a leash, and come when you call him. I see some people who have dogs who stick by their side when in public and don't wander. Other peoples dogs chase the mailman, or rodents into the woods no matter how loud you yell at them. I wanna be able to do this with my dog. He sticks close for the most part, but if there are other dogs/people/animals/cars he catches interest too, he'll bolt. I'm concerned about this because I'm close to a major highway, and I've heard too many horror stories of Fido getting squished by a truck because he wouldnt listen and stick by his owner.
Starts with some hardcore leash training...once he doesnt pull from you when on a leach start taking him on short walks off the leash...tie the leash around his body to stop him from pulling...simply put the leash onhis collar....wrap it around his body and back through the lesh so its tied and so it tightens up on his body when he pulls....i got my Boxer leash trained this way in a weekend.

Takes time and patience to do it right without abuse. Alot of people buy them for the furry cuddliness and just expect some sort of quick easy fix for any behavioral problems. Think of it this way... humans don't learn or unlearn a habit or behavior over night, neither do dogs. IF the dog won't stop doing something he's not supposed to do it's your fault, not his. He's jumping on the couch cause he's pissed someone is entering his turf and he probably wants the high ground. I personally would repeat the scenario a few times and physically claim the couch as your own turf while its happening. Don't let him on. You probably shouldn't even let him move at all when it happens. He has to learn it's not something to get worked up over.

If he's already made it up there and now you're trying to calm him down and pull him off it's too late. He won't get that he isn't supposed to be doing it until you keep him from getting up there in the first place. If you let them do stupid shit then yell at them or hit them after the fact they'll forget and do it again. Stop it beforehand and they're more likely to remember.

your are correct. the key is to understand pack mentality. If you are not willing to be the dominant pack leader the dog will assume the role.
