well i deliver pizzas and get stiffed all the dang time and it sucks. i drive the food to your house as fast as possible and walk up to ur house in the rain and you can even spare a extra $1.00? last night i go to deliver this pizza and the total due was $19.99. the guy gives me a $20.00 and says "oh you can ust keep the change" WTF? i was like i wouldnt even waste my time giving you the **** penny. how can someone have you drive 8 miles at night to deliver their food and they know you got to drive another 8 back to work and they just give you $.01 or $.33 i mean wht is that? but yeah a bad waiter gets no money from me unless i cn tell they are trying. if they just blow me off then i blow off their tip. but if their really nice and i can tell they were just given too many ppl to wait on then i dont mind

I don't usually stiff people, and I've been known to leave my wife at the table while I go a block away to an ATM, then to the cash register to get change for a tip, since we seldom carry any cash. This is even for mediocre service.

I tip fairly well, usually in the 20% range if service is pretty good, 30%ish if it's great, and still usually will leave 10% or $1 (whichever is more) if it's poor. Reason being that we usually go when places are busy, we have a child with us*, and I've worked in foodservice quite a bit (even after I finished all my schooling, while looking for another job), so I know how hard the work can be... but still isn't an excuse for rudeness. I loved hearing the waitresses bitch about only clearing $50 or $60 in tips on a weeknight at our steakhouse as they were dropping full plates for the dishwasher to empty and clean, while I was lugging out pans of burning embers from the grill, cleaning up grease, covered with sweat and cow blood and hauling out 100 lb barrels of disgusting trash... when I made somewhere around $40 if I was lucky (not to mention I paid taxes on mine while they paid next to none). I got lots of "atta-boys" for cooking great steaks, but seldom any tips.

*Just a note, we go out with our kid, but having worked in the industry in several different capacities, I can't stand people who bring their brood of children and let them go wild because "we're out to dinner tonight." These people leave the most God-awful messes when they leave, with tons of food on the floors and ground into the carpet/tile, spilled drinks, sauces all over the tables, salt/pepper shakers emptied into plates, etc. My son is fairly well-behaved in restaurants, the worst he does is get fidgety sometimes, but we make sure he understands that when you go out in public you have to behave like a young gentleman, tell the waitresses "Thank you," clean up the majority of the messes you make and generally leave a minimal amount of problems for the staff to clean up after you. Some of these families run the servers ragged, leave horrendous messes, and still leave little to no tip when they leave... they make me sick.

Keep this stuff in mind when you guys have kids of your own someday, please?

Ive been a server/bartender for 3 yrs now. I just have to say the worst thing u can do is leave 1 dollar def. Its like a kick in the nuts. Also you do needto realize it does get very busy sometimes. Which makes in not possible to do everything for everyone. I work at a upscale italian rest and can handle 6 tbles when busy. It is not a easy thing what so ever. You need to realize that some patrons **** and just ask for to many things and yell at you for nothing. Everytime I go in I get pissed off a a tbl lol. Then again I work in chestnut hill there a diff breed of humans lol.

But TIPS= to insure prompt service. So you still need to bust your *** for each tbl to deserve your money. But a normal tip should be 20% of the whole bill. not 15% cause 15% is considered shitty but some ppl think its normal. When the bill gets higher you still need to tip 20% even if the bill is 300 bux still tip 60 dollars not 20 cause u think its to much./////rant lol

ps op^^ your right about the kids. parents think its okay for there kids to write in crayon on white tbl cloths sorry thats just rude and costs the restaurant money since they have to throw away the tablecloth. happens all the times. Crumbled bread on the floor kids are the most hated ppl in rests. Thats why I love the bar no kids best perk of the job. Oh and kids usually mean twice as much work for no money wat so ever. When I have kids I will be tipping more just because kids are worth nothing on a check. But yes they will b behaving at the restaurant also

I'm not sure I agree with the above.... even though I've been there/done that. Does it cause you more work to bring out a $60 steak than a $12 plate of pasta? Not really, no, but you want to get paid $2.40 to bring out the pasta and $12 to bring out the steak? Sorry, I don't buy that....

And I don't think 15% is shitty tipping, either. Waitstaff in some places may think that, especially if they cater to higher-class clientele, but some of us are struggling financially and to add on 8-10% for taxes, then another 20% for our waiter/waitress... the total of the meal is only 2/3 of your bill at that point.

Let me ask you, redliner, answer truthfully, how much do you clear in tips per night (weekday and weekend) for your 6 hours or so of work? This is assuming a 4-10 or 4:30-10:30 shift... maybe an hour or 2 longer at the most. Seriously, how much do you make in tips?

no yeah 15 % is onsidered shitty by anybody i know. Its acceptable I guess but I get pissed when I do a great job and get 15% seems like thats mostly older adults but still. you gotta rem we get paid 2.63 an hr. Then get taxed on our tips. It sucks the govt taxes 14% of your tips so if you get 15% your not making to much. last yr i paid 900 bux in state taxes cause my hourly rate didnt cover it. This yr it did cause as a bartender yopu get paid more thank god lol

seriously as a server I make between 60-120 a night depending on the night.

as a bartender I get paid 100-200 a night.

also rem on the whole 60 dollar steak think. the server personally pays taxes on that steak also since you get taxed on your tips ppl forget that

And I know for a fact that most waitstaff lie about the tips they pull.... in every place I've ever worked they reported the bare minimum to bring them up to minimum wage. And this is condoned by the establishment as well. Making $2.63 an hour doesn't mean shit when you clear $10 an hour in tips.... and then ***** that it's not enough and 15% is a shitty tip. Most places in the world don't tip, I know, I've been there. And being taxed 14% on your tips is less than half of what I get taxed on my salary.... so how is that unfair?

100/8 = 12.50 an hour, plus $2.63.... so about $15 an hour.

200/8 = 25.00 an hour, plus $2.63.... hell, dude, you make a helluva lot more money than I do.

And as I mentioned, I get taxed a shitload more. Currently, I'm making about $6.38/hour after taxes. By your own calculations, you're making about $12.90-21.50 an hour after taxes.

Still think you're underpaid for that waitstaff/bartending job?
