do you need test tones?

Do you need test tones to set your gains with a volt meter? or can you get away with a regular track? i find all these sites for test tones but i have no idea what I'm looking at as far as what freq to use for subs and components.

I used tones to set my amps because it gives you a steady output compared to playing a song...
