Do you all really disconnect the battery before every install?

I have helped on over a thousand threads and fixed dozens of vehicles that a disconnected battery would have prevented. My advice is intended to help people perform safe installations and minimize the chance for error or problems.
What keep_hope_alive says should be considered the final word. The man knows his stuff.

Installer competency does not mean everything will work right the first time so the need to test wires with the battery connected is a real possibility. Metering wires for alarm or remote start installation is easiest completed when the battery is still connect however in most cases not impossible with it disconnected
don't get me wrong, i agree with most of what you've said. i don't want this to be a bashing session. it really should have just been a thread where people state what they do and no one comments. sorry i singled you out.

i just caution you when providing general advice that a novice will follow. you and i probably agree that someone who will not be careful or does not understand electricity should not be stripping and connecting live wires. and i assume you and i have both repaired installations where the original installer damaged gear or blew fuses as a result of shorting out live wires.
