do i really have to fuse it?

But any modern amp will have fuses right? I don't see how a short anywhere on a wire that is fused near the battery could cause harm to the amp because the circuit would immediately be broken right?
Idk, you tell me, you seem more knowledgeable on the subject.
this amp is not fused, thats why it calls for a fuse within 18" of the amp itself, and to my knowledge, general install says to fuse the main line 18" from the battery...

Not immediately. Fuses can take over there rated power for a small amount of time. Thats enough time to destroy an amp. I saw it happen in my friend's car. He had a fuse from the battery but his wire shorted and it blew all the fuses on the amp and toasted it. With a second fuse there probably would have been enough delay that the amp might not have been destroyed. However I'm not 100% sure on that, but I'm pretty sure.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

fuse blocks are not expensive, go to walmart and get one for cheap, it may not be the best, but at least your safe. So get your lazy *** to walmart.
i don't have a walmart in my city, #1 and #2 i pride myself on being lazy //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Wow, didn't know that. Makes sense. Those zx's don't have fuses?

Some frightening info in here...

Think about this for a second. The fuse in the power wire is there to break the short between the positive terminal on the battery and the negative chassis of the vehicle. So the "18"" value really doesn't mean anything, the important part is that you do it before the power wire has a chance to short out against something grounded. This means before it passes through the firewall, even with the firewall grommet or gasket that you need there.

Fusing at the amp is unnecessary.

even if the amp has no fuses on it?

Not all newer amps have fuses.

Hifonics xx series does not sundown 3000ds do not. You do need at least one fuse in the line. If you have a second battery in the car you need more then one fuse.

How are you going to fuse the amp in such a way that it reacts faster than the main power wire fuse, yet doesn't restrict current?

Adding a second fuse of the same value doesn't do anything, and adding one of a smaller value begs the question of why aren't you just using the smaller value under the hood in the first place?

o.k makes sense... however, why would kicker recommend fusing close to the amp as well? the line is already fused by the battery, 250 amp, they recommend a 100 amp fuse at the amp... not that i don't believe you, just like to learn...

I only said add a second one if there was a second battery in the trunk because if the front fuse blew because of a short the the wire would still be powered by the rear battery.
