I would add a seccond battery, because it will be MUCH cheaper than putting a GOOD alt on your vehicle. You are not going to find a decent high output alternator for your vehicle for much less than $500. I realize that there are many companies that offer an "overwound" toyota alternator, but they will all have the same or signifigantly lower outout at idle, due to the small size of the case. In order to increase the output at lower engine speeds on that vehicle, you would need one of our large case conversion kits, and that would run you $499.
Adding a seccond battery would improve the voltage drop (for short periods at a time) and your stock alternator will survive as long as you excersize common sense when playing the system. As long as you only play at high volume levels for a couple minutes at a time, and turn it down periodically to give the alt time to bring the batteries back up, you should be fine.
We have some open-box specials on Powermaster suplemental audio batteries if you want to add one for cheap. They are much more effective than an optima. Shoot me a PM if you are interested.
