Do I absolutely need a head unit for my 1999 taurus?

I'm buying some subs and an amp. But before I do, do I need to buy a head unit? I really don't want to (simply to save $). Here is what my car looks like now (random image i found):

If I need to buy a special wiring kit that's fine, just let me know =)

spend the money and get an aftermarket headunit....but you will need a special mounting kit.

just my opinion.....i had a 98 that i put subs and an amp in with the stock headunit=yuckky

that head unit SUCKSSS.... extra big buttons for fat people with fat fingers, no sound quality, I would replace if I were you.

I would try to get a new headunit myself. Just better quality and control over your music than the factory head can give.

My cousin had a 01 Taurus with the factory cd headunit with a 6 disc factory changer in his armrest and worked fine for him, but he always wanted to change it out to give himself a few more options with his music.

The kit for that car is higher than something that you would get for most radios, but check on Ebay and on Crutchfield.com.

Crutchfield had a special going on, if you bought a new headunit from them, then they would take half of the cost of the special kit that you needed to install it. (Meaning the kits like you would need with the AC controls on them)

if u keep the stock unit u will need to a LOC line output converter, my gf has a 06 civic with the factory head unit in it, with a loc and it sounds fine

Any suggestions on a LOC?

Are you saying that the only wiring I will need to buy (other than what comes with the amp/sub) is a LOC?

That should be it, we did that in my cousin's 01 taurus, and it worked fine. Just a basic line output converter with 5 wires ( left + left -, right + right - and a extra ground for the converter but not all of them have that) Worked fine.

Only thing about those cars is the heart of the radio is in the trunk on the right hand side I believe, wiring harness, etc.....

I have a flip up pioneer dvd player. Not that it matters but it came from Seattle Seahawks, Walter Jones.
