I guess you have been around, like myself. Do you remember in the late 80s and early 90s when everyone was running the Orion HCCA 225 @ 1/2 to 1/4 ohm? They were loud, but in my opinion those setups sounded like garbage, especially on rock/metal.Gunz4me you are right. I guess I openned up a can of worms. I will admit though that class D amps not run @ 1 ohm especially with today's technology have caught up in sound with the class AB amps.
I am sure I will start something here myself, but in my opinion, 1 ohm class D setups are more for SPL than SQ. Granted, damping factor isn't as important as it used to be because the highly inefficient subwoofer drivers out there on the market today have a suspension that can make up for the lack of damping. You can blame my old school roots, but 1 ohm and sound quality just do not go hand in hand!
IMHO some of the best sounding amps are class AB and of the high voltage/high impedance variety. If you want to go LOUD and give up a little SQ, then you go high current/low impedance class D.
With regards to SPL, I will still stick to my guns and say that a class AB amplifier and a class D amplifier with the same RMS power should make no difference. In theory, a class D amplifier should draw less amps from the charging system than a comparable class AB amplifier if they put out the same RMS power.
