DMM/gain setting help?

I have all the eq and crossovers on my deck turned off, eq on the amp set to 0, and gain set to 0. I unplugged the sub from the amp put the DMM in using a 50hz test tone volume up to 45 on my deck. The DMM reads 1.6 before I even touch the gain on the amp. When I do turn the gain on the amp up I **** near have to turn it all the way up to get the correct voltage i need (34.6) I have the DMM set to AC I don't know what the problem is any help would be appreciated.

what amp? does ur deck have a subwoofer control? if so what it set at?
Sundown 1200d, yes the deck has subwoofer control. its set to be on. the only other thing that i can adjust with the subwoofer control is the slope and volume and when i touch those the dmm reading goes up.

The subwoofer volume option is the problem. If it's set to 0 then that's why you have to turn your gain up all the way. Turn your subwoofer volume up 3/4 of the way and then set your gain. Then after setting your gain and putting all HU options back the way you like, turn the sub back down on your HU. Play your music and just remember that MAX is the setting you used to set your gain. NEVER go above that or at least very far above it because when you do, you are clipping.

Ok I understand what you're saying completely but my problem is before I even touch the gain on the amp isnt the dmm supposed to read 0? Its reading 1.6 before I touch anything and then if i do as you said by turning up the sub volume the dmm goes up higher and thats without me touching the gain on the amp.

Touch the two leads together before measuring the AC voltage coming out of your amp. It's not normal to read 1.6 volts all the time. If you're touching the leads to your outputs and it reads something even with the gain all the way down, that's not necessarily abnormal. If this continues, look into buying a different meter or preferably borrowing someone's fluke meter. Fluke is the best.

Well i had the sub option set to on and its set to 80hz at 0 ( mine can only go to +6 or -15) I think my issue is the dmm because I set my gain before and never had this issue.

so this works? i heard that using the dmm and finding the number u need to get the amount of power is off. im worried cuz when u wire up your sub it will see less power. im at 1 ohm but if i rise to 1.33 that 900 i want is more like 700rms or so

It had to work with it on for me because with it off i wasnt getting a reading at all when i turned the amp gain up. I'm going to get another dmm or more than likely an oscope just to make sure everything is set right.
