diy home theatre computer speakers + crossovers

im looking to fiberglass a stand for my computer monitor, it would house a headunit, two 4"~6.5" midrange drivers, a pair of tweeters, a set of crossovers, a front headphone jack, and maybe some other handy things (ideas welcome)

now, im not sure what would sound best in home audio, because quite frankly, i have no idea. im looking for a cheap lil headunit that can power the speakers (MUS HAVE REAR AUX INPUT, SW OUT, +1 OTHER PREOUT), and a "component set" that would work well in home and would not sound harsh, i have a pretty nice equalizer that came with my videocard (lol?) so i dont need to worry about that. im not looking for some crazy 50lb preamp to lug all over the place, a computer power supply will power the headunit - im not going to start a dance club here //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif - also, shielded speakers would be a +

another note, i will be using the headunit amplifier so the crossovers only have to be one channel highpass, for the tweet, and highpas\lowpass for the mid, im looking to play down to ~80hz with the mid. so they shuoldnt be too hard to build - maybe just caps and that stuff

somthing along the lines of this concept i just sketched out;

monitorstand6er.gif

i figure when i go live in a dorm soon, that this would be a great way to supply music to my room, possibly able to hook my television up to it if its not too terrible off axis :p

i know how i am going to build it and paint it, i just need any ideas of what would be handy for it to have (extra features and such) and what speakers\tweeters\crossovers to use, ill have my own dedicated subwoofer\amp for it.

thanks guys. (lol, aka squeak\jack)

also have these tweets available locally for $20, and i have a pair of image dynamics IDQ6.5's as well - but both would need shielding because they will be within 10" of my monitor (no LCD for me lol)

whats your price limit? and how much space for the enclosure could you glass in there?

maybe a couple of these on each side ran full range?

or these

or maybe a pair of these tweets with a pair of rs150s drivers...you could always use the 7" version instead of the 6" version if you have the room.

also i think your going to need a home theater receiver not a headunit. do you want 2.1? or you can just get a 5.1 receiver for home theater usage later on. it gives you more power options and most likely a way better sound than a car headunit.

three of the tang bands ran full range with maybe a notch filter or whatever would be pretty sweet. if you run full range your going to need a subwoofer most likely to sound right. might want to move this to the home theater section so you can get more help.

im a moderator. i had it in the ht section for like, 4 hours, and noone even looked at it -_-

anywho, im not looking for some crazy audiophile sound here, i seriously dont have speakers for my computer (at all), and all i wanna do, is glass an enclosure for them, wich would be in a stand for the monitor.

reasons:

A. small and contained as possible

B. easy to move around

C. inexpensive

D. looks

im really not that concerned that a reciever could do better than a car hu, because i know it could. but its really just a stereo (yes 2.0) left\right thing that really wont be playing very loud at all, so i will be fine with the 5~10wpc that the headunit will spew out at me, because thats all i need quite frankly. when i build my HT setup for my television, then i can worry about all that crap.

im really liking that TANG BAND W3-871S, maybe two of those and the vifa tweeters my friend has would work well... but then again then are 8ohm -_- id really like 4ohm if possible. and they are only 3"

sigh.

as far as price, id like to keep it as inexpensive as possible - because again - its not going to be my real HT setup, its just somthing that i can use instead of two aura fullrange 2" speakers //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif . but thats not saying i cant spend $100 on it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

I'd rly consider 2 or 4 of the aura 2" or 3" drivers... they are *very* nice... I'm using zaph's B3s design, slightly modified to give them a little better high end response for my computer speakers... My dad has some little ones using the 2" that sound nice... vastly superior to Bose's cubes that’s for sure!!!

i guess those could work.

hows $25 shipped? PM me

and anyone got links on how to make cheap passive crossover for a single speaker? lol, looks like all i need now is a deck with front\rear\aux\sub //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

how about some 2 way 4" pioneer speakers, I think they sound good just off of a HU. I don't know if they are sheilded, proabably not.

Ideas

1. On the back of this maybe you can have an integrated power strip of some sort so that your power runs to the back of this and you only occupy one outlet in your dorm.

2. Have a mic/Aux input.

3. A cell phone holder, that will charge and you can use you speakers

4. A cup holder

5. A night light (4"-9"neon/led) to iluminate your keyboard, or papers at night while you roommate is sleeping.

6. A mirror so that you can look over your shoulder.

7. Drawer for school supplies.

That all i can think of from my soon to be over dorm days.

good ideas, but i think i have some good ideas on what speakers im going to go with, just need to slap some bucking magnets on them adire sf7's and i should be good to go.

lol, so would i - but can i get them for under $30\pair?

//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

im not looking to spend $60~100 on just midranges - that i will do when i do my HT setup.
