Digital Designs vs. Dc Sound Lab

just remember being able to "take" more power dosent make it louder. you can put in a bigger coil and will handle alot more power but will also take more power to get moving. what you want is a eff power. these day people want a sub to "handle" gobs of power.

you also effect mass which lowers the fs with heavier coil. the coil should match the motor!

eather choise you cant loose. i would pick the 1 with a good local dealer so you get good support.

Ive got a 15 dc level 4 xl. Got it hooked up to a discus 2000.1, I've never had a problem with it. Ive also got two 1508. While they are completely different subs I can say that the build quality of both has impressed me. Overall Im happier with the DC. Had the level 2 8s been available before, I would have gotten them instead of the 1508's just based off of my experience with the product and DC's customer service which I have no complaints about as I have always received a prompt reply.

Wingsfreak, you have mentioned leads breaking on level 4's, how many people have you heard this from? I have no experience with them but have not heard this to be a "tendency. " By running it at over rated rms is it not safe to assume it might not hold up as long? Same with running amps below stable loads. Even if a company is known for underrating their products, imo, I wouldnt complain about a sub getting damaged if I was running it at over rated power.

if you have a AQ HDC3 getting hot on 1200 RMS your just not setting your gains right and most likely the install isn't ideal..

the single AQ with 2200 aginst a pair of lvl4s or 3500 will be pretty **** close output wise.. i've personally put 2kw clean to the hdc3..

honestly the 2 subs your looking at are different beast.. the level 4 is more of a low tuned small box driver with the dd like alot of port area and higher tunes.. for pure output the 3500s handle 2kw per woofer in 4 cubes tuned to 36 with 60in^2 of port area..while the ideal box for the level 4s is closer to 3.5 tuned to 33 with 45in^2 of port area.. honestly i can tell you than 2500 isn't truly enough for a pair of 3500s and its more ideal for the level 4s.. you can do the level 4s in 3.5 tuned to 36 for more output but they start to get peaky pretty fast..another great option is the FI SSD and ascendant audio chaos..

Yes motor strength affects power handling. Why do you think you see little motors on low power subs, and massive slugs on the spl subs.....
Motor strength has nothing to do with power handling, it will give you more sensitivity and therefore more SPL with the same amount of power. Massive slugs also don't mean high motor strength. A big heavy motor may absorb more heat before reaching an thermal compression, but that is for extremely long term power handling not often important for daily use - but perhaps industrial use.

Whaddup CAF,
I'm in a dilemma. My current setup is an Audioque HDC3 15" on an SaE1200D Amp, and as soon as I turn my head unit up to 24 i start to smell coil and Idk what to do. I've done the big 3, but stock battery and alt in a 2004 Explorer. Since I can't seem to fix my problem I figured I'm gonna upgrade my system all together instead of downgrade.

Unless there is a solution but i still wanna upgrade //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I'm looking into doing two Digital Design 3500 15'' Woofers. They can handle 1200RMS and 4800 peak.

Also, I'm considering doing DC Sound Lab Level 4 15''s that handle 1000W Rms and 2000W peak.

I've got lots of Cab space in my Explorer giving me plenty of options for a custom box. I'm gonna do the ports in the center of the box.

The price range between the two is about 100$. The DD's are 400 a piece and the DC's are about 300 a piece.

Fairly close in price.

Any insight would be fantastic from supporters of either company.

For an Amp I would love to get the crescendo 3k watt amp, pickup a shuriken battery, and an alternator.

Anyway,

Thanks //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I seriously doubt the problem is the sub, it sounds more of an install error.

Audioque is on the same level as DC and DD when it comes to output and quality. You will just be swapping brands.

personally for the upgrade, id just buy another hdc3. they're stronger subs than the 3500s anyway.

but they're right, you shouldnt be smelling coil on that amount of power. i never smelled them once when i had 2k each. 3k each, they're a little stanky.

This is not CAF. You made a wrong turn in Albuquerque.
