Is it just cardboard or does its composition have any real effect on performance?
No no, nothing to do with cardboard at all, the stuff that looks like card board is just a spun lace material that is put on the coil in order to have something for the glue to bond to.

Kapton - Generally a lower power application and is what is seen in most tweeters and midrange drivers...some subs have it as well, especially pro sound based subs like is linked in the video above.

Aluminum - Majority of the car audio people use this mainly due to it is light and very funtional...and decently cheap in comparison to other materials.

Kevlar blend - JBL has a Kevlar former that they use on the WGTi woofers, VERY light and VERY durable, however very costly.

Ceramic - Pioneer has a ceramic former that they use on the SPL woofers that i know of, very cool material, but very costly as well.

The first two are the most common...the 3rd is not, as i believe JBL may have a patent on the technology...or possibly a proprietary right to the technology...not totally sure, but i do know that its awesome, but very expensive.

just for reference, when dealing with overseas builders, and general industry use

spider = damper

top plate = washer

basket = frame

and to build on what midget posted.. some companies wind coils on a heat resistant plastic blend, which is very cheap, but not tolerant of sustained high temps..

Aluminum formers are nice and light, however, they have can sometimes conduct too much heat up to the spirder/cone neck glue joints, severely weakening them when great care isn't taken in adhesive selection .... leading to some pretty nasty failures in use.

if a buildhouse is using crappy adhesives they deserve it.. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

coolest thing I've seen was a fully spun aluminum cone / former.. excellent thermal transfer..

I'm down for any means to increase surface cooling area..

You should see TC Sounds fully Ti spun prototypes they had a while back //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Nice and light and strong ... just one problem ... yeild = 4% back in the day
