Now that I've got my car running and looking good, the audio needs a SERIOUS revamp.

The car is an 85 shelby charger (small lightweight hatchback). It currently has an older kenwood aftermarket headunit, a blown front speaker, and three crappy stock factory speakers. Basically it sounds like crap and has absolutely no bass.

I am a noob when it comes to car audio. Ive been doing a lot of reading lately but I still dont know where to start when it comes to actually putting together a system and not wasting money.

I listen to almost everything but mostly rap, techno, dubstep, country, and hardcore rock.

Could you give me some recommendations for a decent "system"?.. Im guessing I'll need at the very least all new component speakers up front, some speakers for the rear, subwoofers, amplifiers, and maybe a new headunit?

Budget-wise I'd like to keep it reasonable. Definitely don't want to spend over $1000, preferably less but I understand you sacrifice some quality with cheaper stuff! Is it worth looking into buying used audio equipment?

I'm not looking for the most amazing system money can buy obviously, I'm certainly no audiophile, I just want something that is respectable when other people get in the car and enjoyable on the 3 hour roadtrips between college and home.

Hope you guys can help me out!

Thanks

Do a pair of 6.5" 2-way components in the front doors, a pair of modest 10" subwoofers in the hatch and a big 4 channel amplifier to power everything. If you absolutely must have rear speakers, buy some cheap coaxials, power them with the cd player and fade them almost completely out of the equation.

Something like this:

components - CTX65CS - Image Dynamics 6.5" Component Speaker System $190

subwoofers - IDQ10V2.D4 - Image Dynamics 10" IDQ Dual 4 Ohm Subwoofer (2 of these) $320

amplifier - Crescendo Audio :: Amplifers :: 1000C4 4 Channel Amplfier $240

wiring kit - Car Audio Wire $51.50

sound deadener - Second Skin Damplifier - CLD Automotive Sound Deadening Vibration Mat (40 sq ft) $105

That'll be right around $1k after shipping, so you'll need extra for speaker wire and an material to build your enclosure for the subs. This equipment, properly installed, will sound fantastic. It won't pound potholes in the road, though...

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll definitely look into that!

What should I do about a Head unit? Should I look for something with at least one or two preamp outputs? My current head unit doesnt have any.

Also, does that amp provide enough power to power both the component speakers AND the subwoofers adequately?

If I was looking to make this slightly cheaper are there some other component speakers and subs that I could look into that would cost a little less?

Thanks again
