DB-R's top picks for WORST amplifier design..

imagine how many kicker kx amps that are out there...as well as orion 2500d's.
most all of those are pretty **** popular amps... list seems worthless imo
Exactly.

His list is highly dependent upon the total sales of the amplifiers, his specific customer base/business and customer demographics, use of the amplifiers he's repaired, when the failure occurs, etc etc.

Just because he's repair more 2500D's than he has Brand X amplifiers doesn't mean that the Brand X amplifiers don't have a higher percentage of failures compared to total units sold, for example.

He might simply have more 2500D's sent to his business than he does Brand X due to his customer base. Maybe very few people who own a Brand X amplifier have actually heard of his company, while he is more well known to those 2500D owners who've sent their amps to him.

Or maybe the Brand X's fail while still under warranty so they are repaired by the manufacturer as opposed to being sent out to an independent repair service (such as his) whereas the 2500D's fail after warranty and it's cheaper for him to repair as opposed to sending it into Orion.

There are dozens of variables that are going to affect his "list", making it highly unreliable and inaccurate.

I realize some people are gonna raise hell and say things like, "well, I had my KX Series (or whatever amp on list) for 4 years no and haven't had a single problem. My response will be, "can't argue with the invoices... you may just have better luck than everyone else..."

Horrible logic.

When I talked to Chris a couple of days ago, some of the conversation centered on repeat offender amps - amps that come in to his shop with similar or exact same problems no matter whom they come from. I think this list reflects this to some extent.

How about people who come on boards like this, looking to get their stuff fixed...

"My 2500D stopped working, who should I send it to to get fixed?"

"Well, Db-R did a great job on mine, give him a shot"

Now people searching for "2500D repair" will see that this guy does a good job, and bam, there's more 2500D's being sent his way...just another example of how/why his numbers could be an innacurate form of reasoning.

How in the hell do you roach a Memphis Studio 1000, much less multiples of them? I **** near beat the pair I had to death on several occasions, and the only thing I wish from them is that I hadn't sold them. Actually, I can say the same about the Kicker KX I had, too. Maybe we can get him to elaborate?

Well give the guy credit for stating some facts as he sees it, at least it is info. And if Noobs are buying Kicker amps and frying them because they have no idea what they are doing, it still gives insite to the issue, and maybe they will buy somthing else that will better suit their needs.

I will take is info into account, but if all on the fourm would give their input also we would get a more realistic picture for sure.

That's very questionable and controversial topic. While not agreeing with any classification without solid criteria, i feel a pain of a repair guy coming from it.

Many, many newer amps uses semi-devices, which are operated on their thermal limit (by their datasheets). Outputs are NOT matched. Electrolytic capacitors are low-grade, they are leaking, exploding, burning (even making a hole in a board under them). Board traces in many cases are too thin to handle current going through them, they burn. Boards mounted on heatsink with couple screws, it vibrates and FETS' legs just breaks....

Again, it is questionable whether these factors dramatically affect reliability and sound quality of amps. They offer better value, more bang for the money, killer combination. But this approach affects REPAIR-ABILITY. Sadly, I think repair business will dry out completely soon.

how so? Chris has over 30 amps in his shop right now and can barely deal with the amount of people sending him crispy equipment. Especially from us SPL guys who push their equipment to the limit. I think he's going to be in business for a long time, especially since he fixes stuff that Audiotekx and Zed Audio can't/wont.
