Dang Local audio shop

We can only guess as to the value of their install for your car and system. If they just screw the amp down to the floor of the trunk and slap stock sized speakers in the doors using stock wiring, sure that's expensive. But on the other end of the scale, a custom built amp rack, all new wire run, custom mounting baffles for the doors, etc... would cost alot more than that. So depending on what you are getting, that may or may not be a good price. But I haven't read the entire thread so maybe I missed the install details already.

I been to the shop...the former is more likely than the latter.

Sadly, that seems to be a more and more common way for local B&M's to do business. Then they wonder why they are losing their ***** to internet sales. Local shops need to realize the days of selling snake oil, and getting 120% of msrp just because the local people are stupid, is almost over. The days of getting $150 an hour labor for sub standard installs, and doubling the actual time spent when billing, are coming to an end. The days of know-nothing idiot salemen selling high end equipment based on audio voodoo are all but done.
I have a local shop here that is the same way. Its been under 3 diff names in the past 3 or 4 years now, but always the same idiot sales people with the same "I know everything and you know squat" attitude, which couldn't be further from the truth. Im sure they sit there and wonder why nobody will come in and buy their multi-frame Memphis subwoofer for $1100... which is what they quoted me for one raw 10" that i can buy on ebay for under $300.

This is why I like Mexico.

I just payed someone $160 to install the following

Alarm system

-Instalation

-Actuator for 2doors (Parts and labor)

-Relays for Trunk (Parts and labor)

Amp

-installation

Head unit

-Installation

And in USA the first place I went to quoted me $225 for the alarm system before the Actuators and remote trunk.

I went there today to get a quote for a install and he said 299.00:eek: but I think he was just throwing extra stuff in. I have a 93 lincoln town car and those cars come factory with a small amp so he said I would need some kind of harness. My question is why would I need a harness for that amp if im not even using it? I am goin to run my door and rear speakers off the deck so what was he talking about?
You still need the harness to bypass the factory amp.

Im right on wit gizm with this one I think that is a fair price considering everything thier doin...
I dont know if fair would be the word I would use I was thinking more like the going rate. I feel that 300+ dollars for a 2-3 hour job is not really a fair price I was thinking between 150-200.

Well guess what, you don't make the prices.

Labor isn't cheap man, this is how people make their living.

At most shops, installers are commission based... getting 40-50% of the labor rate charged. Depending on how quick/quality of an installer you are, how long you've been installing, and how many of certain cars you have done... you can make great money somedays and next to nothing the next. Also, the shop has to make something on what is installed. On everyday installs, most shops charge a flat rate for the task regardless of how long it takes. Custom jobs and installs, or more involved installs may be charged hourly or on a per application basis.

I hope you NEVER want anything truly custom... or you'll shit your pants. A LOT of time goes into it.

Think of ANY labor intensive profession or shop you go to... Mechanic, Painter, Artist, Photographer, etc, etc, etc...

You're paying for convenience, warranty, and experience.

Sure you can do it yourself, but it is going to take you longer, and if something goes wrong it's on you.

I've been on both sides of the table here, enthusiast and installer.
