i bought a panasonic head unit and it comes with a d/a converter and i was wondering what exaclty does it do for the head unit and is it a good thing to have one or is it useless

You need it.

The D/A converter takes the digital info the player reads off the disc and converts it into analog signals that you then feed to outboard amps.
