Crossovers and Mids

What should I be hearing with my mids on the comp set? Should they be bumpin like a sub? The bump is very faint and it just sounds like it is playing the treble along with my tweets. I have no idea how to do crossovers but I know my HU has a bunch of settings to do each individually. Would that help?

Again... I don't know what the mids are supposed to sound like being that it is my first system.

you have your highs and you have your lows, then you have your mids. The mids are everything between the high and low frequencies. Mids are vocals and guitars and stuff like that. If you turn your mids up higher you will get louder sounds from the vocals and instruments. I dont really get what you mean though?

Idk... it sounds like my tweets overpower everything else or maybe it is just me. I always thought the mids had bump to them but I guess I was wrong. They did on my stock system. Nevermind... haha

What is the advantage of having 6x9s in the back.

All of it....

Idk... I was just wondering what other people hear. Before I bought my system, I was under the impression that my tweets play vocal and the treble, mids play the high freq bass and the subs play the low bass. I guess I was wrong... lol

I guess stock speakers have subs built in.

Stock speakers have to cover as much of the range as possible. They don't get it all, and they do a oor job of what they do cover. They are efficient and have to be able to provide some bass. They don't really get all that low or loud though. Even a modest sub will destroy them in low freq output and extension.

You don't want your mids trying ot go too low. It will lower thier power handling and shorted their lif expectancy cause they just don't have the excursion needed to got low with authority, that's what subs are for. Mids should cover from the upper ranges of the bass guitars through the vocal ranges. The tweets cover above that. The majority of the sound should be covered by the mid in most systems.

generally speaking your mids will cover anywhere from 65hz - 2.5 khz give or take. some people like to cross their mids a little higher. ive got mine crossed at 100hz. are you using the passive crossovers with your comp set? if so ur speakers should be playing correct frequencies, being that they are new (i think ) they will start to play the lower notes a little better when they break in. if your tweet is too overpowering check your passive crossover (assuming you got em) and there should be a tweeter attenuation 0db, -3db, -6db. mess with that until your tweet isnt so overpowering.

when i got my first set of comps i was high crazy. most of my eq settings i had set way too high on my 4khz, 8khz, 12khz settings. once i got my gains set correctly, crossover on the amp set correctly, i get the best sound when i have my eq set to flat.

I have no idea how to set any of that. I wish there was someone in pittsburgh who knows about this stuff and could correct set everything for me.

You should read your HU manual. It will explain how you can set your crossovers and your EQ. Best thing you can do is just fiddle around with it until you get a sound you enjoy.

If you can't, then it may be a lack of equipment/installation (deadening/speaker placement, etc), which is alot more complicated. If you are unhappy with your mid response, the best thing you can do for it is deaden the doors. This link gives an excellent tutorial on how to best deaden your doors. If you're seeking excellent SQ, read up on the tutorials in that forum.

3 layers of RAAMmat on the doors, floor, roof, trunk, pillars.

Trust me... I have a decked out system. It sounds amazing right now. I just don't know if could sound any better if I turn the crossovers on. I wish I could try it and see but I'd jack something up knowing me.

You don't even have any crossover points setup between your sub and your high/mid? You need to. You can't jack anything up if you set your HU to a crossover point. You need to tinker with the Db slope of the crossover point, too. Usually you'll want to select 12Db or 18Db. This is the slope on how quickly the Hz below (or above with the sub) rolls off. Crossovers don't just cut off the frequency at the point the crossover is set at. This is meant to help blend the different speakers at the cross point.

If you set the crossover of your mid/highs to probably 100Hz at 18Db slope you'll be able to get more 'mid' out of your mids. This is because you'll be able to give them more power before they distort and you could tweak the mid Hz on the EQ higher if necessary.
