Crappy Sound

Okay I'm really just getting into car audio so I need some help. I've got a Pioneer DEH 1400 Single CD Player (4x45W output) and two Sony Explode 9x6in speakers (200W max power each). I don't have an amp yet. My problem is when I turn up my CD deck all the way, or close to it the sound starts to become badly distorted, I can't understand why this occurs since the deck is only outputting 45W/speaker and they should be able to handle 200W. Is it because the amp built into the CD deck is crappy? or are my speakers faulty? or did I install them wrong?

Yes, built-in amps are crappy...

45W is PMPO, not the RMS...

When you turn the head unit all the way up, you usually run over 20% distortion, even more on the lower lines (You'd probably be looking at over 30% distortion, since you have the lowest line Pioneer) ...
Hey, Jmac...

check out my post"abyss amps"..see what you think;)

See, if your speakers can't handle the amp's power, they can blow, if your amp doesn't have enough power to move the speakers and you turn up the volume to compensate, you can cut off the top of the wave (you've used all the current it can give, you get a flat top on a sine wave) and that sounds horrible (mainly due to the extra vibrations of the speaker as it suddenly cuts the rise and return).
