crank up the gain

Check out the gain setting tutorial.

Do not use the gain as a volume knob. It should be set against the headunit with all of the settings the way you want them. You should have test tones and then aquire the proper voltage with a dmm. I am sure someone you know has a DMM.

cool I will do it now
lol. no but seriously there is no way of knowing without a dmm for sure. It will depend on your particular equipment. If you have a 3000 watt amp on a 300 watt sub, obviously halfway is going to be too much. But if your amp and sub are fairly close in specs, then i would imagine halfway would be ok. You should be able to hear the difference when it clips.

it also depends on the pre-out voltage on your HU also. The higher it is, the less you have to crank up that gain.
