Correctly installing two drivers and an amp

Hey guys! I am a noob when it comes to car audio...so please bear with me.

I have two 12" MTX Thunder 3000's in a sealed box. I have a JL Audio 500/1 amp.

I believe the drivers are wired in a series together, but I will have to take them back out of the box to be sure. Now, whenever I turn the volume up loud, the amp cuts out. I believe it is getting too hot and its shutting off as a safety precaution. The music bass from the drivers comes back on after a minute or two after shutting off.

I have no idea what I should do. How should I wire these together, and is this amp alright, or should I buy a bigger amp? Also, is a sealed box the best for this setup? Thank you so much for your help!

Hey, welcome to the forums.

Well, after searching around I found that the MTX Thunder 3000's only come in single 4 and 8 ohm voice coils, so either way you are sending a safe load to the amp. (if single 4 you can wire down to 2 ohm, the JL slash series is good down to 1.5ohm)

Now, do you have a Digital MultiMeter (DMM) easily available? If so, I would check what the final ohm load is that your getting from your woofers.

This very well could be your amp getting hot, but that would be odd as I've heard the JL amps run very cool... Next time this happens, touch your amp's heatsink. Does it feel ridiculously hot?

Also, that JL amp is a good match for these two subs as they are rated at 200 RMS and the JL puts out 500. The sealed box is good for a basic setup, however a custom built ported box will get louder.
