Considering Pioneer DEH-80PRS

I am considering this 80prs unit. I have been reading about it and see it does many things. What I am interested in is the auto-eq and time alignment.

But, I am not sure I can do this with the system components the way they are connected. Here is what I have:

1. Alpine older 9xxx series hu, using front out going to my 4 ch amp, of which I am using 2 channels.

2. polk db6501 components

3. Alpine type R 12d4 sub

4. rockford fosgate punch 400-4, utilizing only 2 channels to polk components.

5. rockford fosgate prime 750 powering sub

All of this is in a 2008 chevy aveo5.

I am confused over network vs standard mode. Do I need the mids and tweets powered seperately to use auto eq and time alignment? I still only want to have them powered the way they are. 2 channels from the punch 400 are powering the components.

I definitely need to learn a lot more about how to set up this receiver before buying it, and that is what I hope to learn from many of you.

What exactly is standard mode? Can you auto-eq/time align using that mode.

Given the components that I have and the way they are wired, how would you connect and tune the 80prs?

I am looking, as I have read, many people are, for better sound from this new pioneer than I have with my old alpine.

Hopefully we will have a good discussion here regarding this receiver, and also please feel free to point me to other sources for info on how to connect it and tune it.

Thanks,

Viper

I have an 80prs. Love it. YES, you can drop the prs into your setup with minimal changes. You would run it in STANDARD mode. In this mode the RCA outputs are used as FRONT R/L, REAR R/L and SUB R/L. You just run the RCAs into your existing Front, Rear & Sub amps and you are good to go. The 80prs will still auto-EQ and time-align just fine in standard mode. It is just that your component sets will be treated as one wide-range set of mid/tweet drivers instead of aligning each driver separately. Running this way you do NOT need to wire drivers "active" with separate amplification - you use your existing amps & speaker wiring & passive crossovers.

If you decide to use NETWORK mode later, then that is when you have to wire amps & drivers on separate channels (i.e. "ACTIVE"). In NETWORK mode the 80prs can only connect to a set of front drivers and a SUB. You can't easily run a set of rear drivers in NETWORK mode. In NETWORK mode the three sets of RCA outputs are used for FRONT MIDs R/L, FRONT TWEETS R/L and SUB R/L

Thanks for the replies. So, this receiver is really worth it and will make my current system/speakers sound better, pretty much for sure???? That is what I really am driving at here. If it is not going to sound better than the Alpine I have, then there would be no use getting it. lol

I've been lurking the 80prs a while. I'm only on the fence because of pioneer being renowned for having trouble with ground loops. The active crossover capability is really tempting, in addition to the AUTO eq and time alignment.

Really a steal of a price at ~250 on amazon

I've never seen issues with the 80

The EQ is very good

Do you know by chance if they still utilize the pico fuse design? I think that was the mean reason why they had issues, not sure though. Good to hear that issue has been resolved though, might have to pick up one of those when I get the money.

It was the issue and I do not know.

Install error. Do it right and you never have problems. If you know there's a pico fuse, then DONT hotswap RCAs. Very simple. I have accidentally hot swapped my RCA once and still nothing wrong with mines either.

i guess that's incentive to buy new then. Install error in this case would be connecting/disconnecting RCAs while the headunit and amplifiers are on?

Nvm you answered it, i tend to edit my posts a lot as well lol

Its very much worth it. I thought my system sounded great and then i got a PRS and it sounded 100% better. The cleanness of the audio is pure gold.

A note about the auto TA and EQ. They do an alright job. You can do better.

im running active so i have time alignment on my tweeters and my woofers separately which Really helps give you that center stage.

Id highly recommend throwing some bass blockers in line with your tweeters and then running them active. You have a 4 channel amp. Might as well.

Do your research on how to run active. Its a bit daunting for those who dont understand how it works but do your research and youll be fine. A headunit like the prs-80 has so many features on tuning and stage alignment tools, might as well use it to its potential.

Do you understand how to run active? Adding bass blockers is passive
