computer nerd i need help!!!

alright i know my way around them but, i have a laptop compaq that i have had for 2 years good thing 30gigs, 512memory 2.4gighz but just resently i have herd wierd noises from the computer it makes a MMMMMMMM like it is reading somethign and then it shuts down adn it erases the disk drives.

sounds like something to do with the hard drive

can you try to track down where the noises coming from? if it's whether the hard disk, cd rom or just a fan inside the laptop???

Maybe the hard drive controller? If it keeps getting erased thats what I would think it was. But Im not sure.
