I was trying to reinstall windows due to the fact that I had a few problems, and wanted to reformat the hdd. I put the windows CD in and continue to the installation. It gets to the part where it says hit enter to continue setup, so I do, then it says in the bottom: Examining disk partition, blah blah blah, but it takes a long time, then it gets to the EULA and I hit f8 to agree then i select partition C to reformat, but then it says error and restarts, and windows is not loading up anymore, just hangs and restarts. Safe mode doesn't work either.

XP Pro...

What do i need to do to format the hdd with a floppy disk or something?

sounds like a disk error if it crashing during partitioning. try doing a quick format on the unpartitions space if it still crashes you might have a bad sector on the HD. and of sourse you wont be able to boot now because once it starts to format the first thing it does it delete the previous MBR

It didn't even start to format, as soon as it got to the page, it said, an error has occured.

I am using Kill@ Active disk to completely erase the HDD, was that a mistake?

It started the delete process, and it deleted the partitions, and process bar has been stuck on 0% for like 10mins.

So I restarted the comp, and put in the windows cd, however when it was starting the installer I got an error from the cd //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

I put in a backup copy of my windows cd, and it started right up. Tho I didn't finish the hdd erase process, setup was acting normal, at it's usual speed. I got to the part where it asked to select a partition, and it notices the hdd, but since there is no partition I went to create a partition. It created the partition, but when I went to install windows on the new partition it said " An error has occured while trying to update new partition"

Is the HDD really "toast" ?

it created the partition, and it reads the disk, it just won't install windows on to it. It's a nice hard drive 120gb, I would hate to put forth the money to buy a new one and there be nothing wrong with the one I have. I will try completeing the erase process with kill disk if that doesn't work, then I guess I will buy a new one

name brand comp's = teh ghey. The only thing good about them is the fact of having a warranty, but you get warranty on parts when you build your own anyways

Wait. after you created the partition you went straight to install? I think you skipped the format process. after you create partition you must format it. then you can install windows

Here is exactly what I did from the beginning.

Ok, I was experiencing problems with windows so I decided to reinstall it. I wanted to delete my HDD cuz there was alot of stuff I couldn't delete.

So I restarted the computer, booted from the Windows CD and it came to the screen where it says hit enter if you want to continue with setup or hit R for recovery.

So I hit enter, and at the bottom it said something like examining hard disk drive... and it took forever, like 5 mins. and I came back and it was at the EULA screen where it says hit F8 to agree. So I hit f8 and it says pick a partition you would like to install it on, so I selected the main partition that had windows already installed and it went to the next screen where I guess it copies files to hdd or something (can't remember been too long) and it said an error has occured please press f3 to restart, and it restarts the computer. Never gets passed that part, as soon as it gets to that screen it says error.

So I figured prolly something wrong on the HDD, so I decided I would format it some other way, thus I downloaded the free Kill Disk thing and created a boot disk with it on it.

Started up the computer with the boot disk and proceeded to delete all data on the harddrive.

However in the progress bar, it just said 0%, and after 10 mins it was still at 0% so I restarted and tried to install windows again.

Got to the part where it says select a partition, but there was none since they must have gotten deleted. So it said press C to create a partition, so I did. Then after a few minutes it was done creating the partition and went back to the screen that says select a partition to install windows on. I clicked the new partition, and it went to the next screen and still got same error //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/furious.gif.fc81ca146dbff91fede3ed290dbc4f4c.gif

OK

1 YOU WILL NEED A FLOPPY DISK

2. CLICK HERE http://1gighost.net/keywest/boot98c.exe

AND FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS

2. GO TO THE BAD PC WITH THE DISK AND STICK IT IN

3. START UP THE PC

ITS GONNA SAY STARTING WINDOWS 98 AND ALL THAT CRAP, JUST IGNORE TILL YOU GET TO A:\

4. TYPE IN "FDISK"

SELECT "Y"

A MENU WILL COME UP SELECT #3 TO ERASE PARTITION

5. IT WILL SAY SOMETHING LIKE ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO DO THIS? SAY YES

AFTER ALL THAT SELECT #1 TO CREATE A PARTITION

YOU ARE CREATING A PRIMARY PARTITION AND USING 100 PERCENT OF THE DISK

6. AFTER IF CREATES A PARTITION AND COMES BACK TO THE MAIN MENU RESTART THE COMPUTER AND WAIT FOR THAT

"A:"

7. THEN TYPE "FORMAT C:"

SELECT "Y"

THIS WILL TAKE A WHILE BUT WILL WORK

IF YOU CANNOT CREATE A PARTITION, YOUR HARD DRIVE IS TRASH

IF THE FORMAT CANNOT COMPLETE OR SAY BAS SECTORS,YOUR HARD DRIVE IS TRASH.

GOOD LUCK
