I have XP home edition on a Acer laptop. The last few days it hasnt been starting up right, it goes to user log on (the screen with your name and picture icon) but then it pretty much freezes, the pointer/cursor cant be moved more than a few times before it totally stops. Like the computer has slowed down to a standstill. It works fine in safe mode, thats the only way to get anywhere on this (im using it right now). I did a full system recovery but its still happening. I need some help on how to get this going again, as far as I know nothing specific happened to cause this???

did you install anything in the last few days?

new hardware/software?

do you use p2p?

i'd recommend using a spyware and antivirus program to scan it in safe mode, and uninstall as much unused software as possible

or just put the disk in and hit any key to boot from disk and run a fresh new copy of windows and by the way hook me up with ur key code

start up in safe mode... uncheck the box for "StartUp Items" disable everything you can but the very basics...then start adding one by one -- I found a trojan horse on the memory on my Video Card of all places... normal virus scans wont find it because they only scan regular system memory.

Can someone clarify exactly how to clear this up, i want to try what you guys have said but im dumb. If i could get step by step directions that would be awesome. Ive already reloaded windows from the CD, it worked ok for a couple times but now its back to being retarded again just like before. Sounds like it might be something like the virus on startup, i just need to be guided through how to get rid of that? thanks all

Maybe, is the start up list under the programs list? Cause theres nothing there in my startup list except for SIS Utility tray, which doesnt even open (i'm in safe mode if that makes a difference).

Safe mode with networking //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif. No lol, go to start>run>> then type msconfig, click on the "startup" tab and uncheck everything you dont recognize.(unless the directory is like C:\Windows\System32 or something important)
