Component help

Hi,

Sorry to make another one of these threads but I drove myself crazy picking out what 4 channel and sub I want and really cant handle finding a set of components right now.

Looking for a pair of 6.5" components. I listen to mostly rock/metal. Want them as loud, clear, and with the best mids as whatever spending around $250 will get me haha. Giving them anywhere between 75-140 watts RMS. Not sure if I want passive or active-Never owned active before. Going in a 2007 Trailblazer, and from what I've seen, unless i'm mistaken, I have a max mounting depth of 3.849"

At this point I will probably buy whichever ones two people agree on first ha. thank you to anyone who helps

I've read alot about those JBL MS-62 that I feel comfortable with them. The focals do seem nice but there doesn't seem to be anyone who bought the JBL's and said they made a mistake. The consensus seems to be you get alot for the money.

The power specs on those JBL's are this

Power Handling:

Peak: 320 watts per pair / 160 watts each

RMS: 160 watts per pair / 80 watts each

I was thinking about the PPI phantom p900.4 but it looks like with the power they require I should be good with an amp that puts out 80-100RMS correct? I do love the size of that PPI though, so I was also considering the JBL GTO-804EZ at 80x4 @4ohm or should I stick with something that has a little more headroom like the p900.4 @ 145x4 or go with something in the middle around 100x4?

Oh BTW I'm probably going to run them passive and I know I could pick up a 2 channel because I do not plan on running rear speakers but I like the 4 channels so I can keep some options open down the road.

Thanks for the recommendations

I have MS62-C and the P900.4 in stock. The P900.4 is a fine choice for just about any good 6.5" component system. If you set up the high pass filter wisely, don't abuse the gain/input sensitivity setting, and don't try to boost the bass around 60-100 Hz, 145W per channel is fine. If you have to use the crossover on the amp I recommend starting at roughly the 100 Hz position for the front speakers.

If you don't trust yourself to know when the speakers are getting overpowered then I can get you the JBL amp.

Trumpet, do you have the PPI BK520.4 in stock as well? 95RMS might be a little more forgiven haha. In your honest opinion if you think that is a good amp with enough power for those JBL's PM me the prices for that amp and the JBL's. I would rather support small businesses as long as the prices aren't ridiculously more.

since u have a sub already, i got some of these JBL GTO608C they sound great, i am very happy with these, but from what u state you are looking to spend they may be too low end for you. i am not rich so i could only get what i could afford, but they sound great.

In defense of Focal VBs, I think anyone who heard them had a good impression of them and they don't seem that expensive usually. The woofer is confirmed to have low THD and low resonance frequency at 67Hz. Here is a picture of frequency response on axis and off axis below. Looks pretty good 50 degrees off axis. Somewhat irregular above 5KHz, but that's easily fixed with equalizer. Are they better than JBL MS-62C? Hard to say. Probably no one has heard both. They're certainly quite different. The Focal woofer is made from processed paper and the tweeter has high resonance, so the woofer is expected to cover a much wide range of frequencies. Well made paper woofers can cope with this. The JBLs employ carbon woofer, which is a stiff material that does not always behave well above 2KHz, so the tweeters _have_ to play low. The problems with many speakers of this type is that tweeters often can't play this low without sounding harsh. However, according to reviews JBLs have pretty nice sounding tweeters.

The March edition of Russian magazine avtozvuk tested the BK520.4. The html version will be available in a couple of months. The results are pretty good.

With 14.4V DC power

RMS watt output at 4ohm: 4x103watts

RMS watt output at 2ohm: 4x158watts

THD at 10% of max watt output: 0.05%(4 ohm)/0.061%(2ohm)

THD at 1watt output: 0.137% (4ohm)/0.197%(2ohm)

SNR with respect to 1watt output: 83dB (so SNR with respect to full output would have been _much_ higher)

So basically it's an honest to god Class A/B amplifier. That's probably plenty of power for _most_ component speakers out there. If you asked me, my personal pick would have been an Alpine MRX-F65 Class D amp (another extremely nice and clean amplifier, but a lot smaller and more efficient), but when you compare the prices, the PPI BK is a great value for a staving audiophile, costing about half the price of Alpine.

I went with MASSIVE AUDIO ck6x from what I searched around I even went with them even though I have a 2 sets of re6.5c at home bnib(if anyone is interested)For the record I love JBL for dj equipment if there car audio is anything compared in quality and sound then I am sure they are good as well.

I listen to rock and metal and the best sounding components I've found are Polk MMs. The mids are full and right on while the tweeters are excellent. They play clear all the way to my maxx volume with no distortion at all on 125 watts.

I can have a BK520.4 and P900.4 shipped today.

Devast83, If i'm looking at the right polks they do look pretty nice. Could you throw up a link so I know i'm checking out the right ones? The Polk's I seen are 2.7 ohms which is cool, but I don't know if the precision power bk520 would be able to get them to full power and I would have no headroom. I am definitely considering them now though especially if I get some feedback on their power demands.

the Focals do look great too but $300 is a little more then I'd like to spend on speakers. I can't spend too much on the Saab or my chevelle will get jealous and the good weather is coming soon to Mass.
