Cold weather vs. Amplifier.

I had 15 hours to drive yesterday, so I left bright and early at 8:00. It was about 25 degrees out, and if I cranked my volume to any more than 20/35, my amp would cut out and reset. This carried on for about 2 hours until the temperature got above freezing. Once it warmed up, my amp worked flawlessly for the rest of the trip, and I kept it cranked to 25-27/35 (normal listening volume)

My thought is that it's something to do with my electrical, not the amp. I didn't have my DMM on me to check the voltage, and I can't duplicate the circumstances since I'm in Florida and the low is 48 tonight (FTMFW!)

Has anyone has problems with their electrical or fuses during cold weather?

It was in the lower 20's a couple mornings last week and my amp was fine...I'm thinking it's something electrical related.

My Alpine Mrp-M1000 just stopped working a few days ago. It was a warmer day around 50 so i was cranking since it had been so long since i have heard my subs really pound. Now the voltage it read is only .1MV my friends AQ 1200 sits aroung 60MV so pretty sure something is wrong. Sending it in wednesday to the amp doc so hopefully i can let you know and if the cold caused it

Yeah, I think it wasnt the amp since it was above freezing in my car. Perhaps my battery doesnt discharge so well in freezing temps.

Mosfet conduction is optimal at 20*C. Though it is desirable to cool the rest to a lower temperature to compensate for thermal conduction coefficients, heat capacity differences that determine the difference of temperature at the die compared to the heatsink. Iono.

Though other material resistances decreases as temperature decreases.

I would say it's your electrical(batts and whatnot) rather than the amp.

Ive seen that before with lower end amps at cold temps it will shut off until it warms up inside the car

I always thought it was the other way around, since my resting voltage is about 1V higher in the winter time than the summer time. I was under the impression that heat is the enemy of electronics?

I live in CO so it gets quite cold and I've never had a problem in the winter. My resting voltage is higher now than it was a couple months ago.. Maybe its the type of battery?

that situation leads me to believe inefficient wiring, loose connections or bad start / charge system. the amp should work better in the cold but the battery ect will perform worse.

I know all the wiring is done right. I've got 4awg Knu Fleks running to the amp. All the connections are tight, the wire is loomed, fused at 100A. In fact, the power wire install was downright pretty //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I'm pretty sure its the battery being gay.

huh? it isnt a low end amp it is a low cost amp there is a big difference lol
