So Im driving today, and suddenly theres no sound.

Turn the car off, turn it back on, all is fine.

It happens again while Im on the highway, and obviously I cant turn the car off, so I eject the disc, put it back in, and the problems solved.

Any ideas as to what might be causing this, and more importantly, what I can do to correct it?

Is the deck properly secured? (i know...silly question but you never know)

One possibility is that is overheating.

The heater ducts behind the head unit can cause very high temperatures inside the dash and limit the head units ability to cool itself.

(I gather that you are running your heater by your reference to the extreme cold.)
