Cheap second battery ....

I'll be switching car in less than 6 months so getting a high output alt is def out of question. I'll put one in my next car for sure //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

But for now, I'm pushing what's in my sign and since i've change my amp (old one was a bxi1606d) i'm getting a lot of volt drop when tilting hard . Nothing anormal on a 70amp alt with a cheap but big walmart battery (can't remember what but like 650cca and 800ca). When car is on, the voltage is aruond 14v +/- but it can drop in the low 11 volt when really bumping... which keep me worried about my amp.... but i ain't letting drop like that for more than a second. I got a voltmeter on dash and i keep my eyes on it.

Are those drop, even if they last fraction of second then goes back to around 14v really bad for my system??? i don't want to blow my amp with low voltage.

If i was gonna buy another battery like mine (at wal mart around 80$ ish) would i get smaller drop (less dangerous)??? like i said, for now alt is out of question since the car is in its last miles... and i don't want to spend alot on a battery... i'm in canada where every **** things cost like 3x your price and shipping a battery is out of question....

Also i'm pretty tire to start the car just to listen some music in parking... just incase i'm emptying an non-deep cylce battery

thank you

and what should i do ? my front battery is like 2 year old, resting at 12,4volt. Should i put the new one in front and the old on in the back? all i know if there's not need to add water in my hood one. Do the battery got the be the same cca , resting voltage and others usual specs...

Marine battery seems affordable and nice... what about that

another battery might be ok but it might just kill the alternator really quick if its that small... maybe find a bat-cap... i havent had any experience with them but from what i can see its basically a battery can a capacitor mixed... they are small and will probably get the job done.. basically all im saying is that alt wont be able to charge that one battery fast enough, let alone the 2nd battery. (do the big 3 upgrade??)

Get a batcap 2000. It will start your car and run the system. At 12 Gauge there is a crx that has a batcap 2000 as the only battery and we're running about 2000w on that system right now. And you can take it out and use it again //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

big 3 is almost done... but the alt is unreachable under the engine..... sucky car //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif So batt neg to ground is done ... i'll be doing the rest once with my car mechanical friend latter ... if i still have that car at that moment....

I ain't running full tilt often, but i don't like drop and probably ain't getting the potential of the amp with that.... i just want the electrical to stand for few minute at time while the alt is able to charge the system like 95% of the time... running music not to loud...

Understand my needs?? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

oh and btw since , I hate to say this here with the risk of being flammed the rest of my life... but when i had my capacitor in ... the drop were ALOT less //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif Don't worry though, i kill the piece of crap with passion

One word of caution, you might want to hold off on the Batcap 2000. There is another member here that is having issues running 1500w RMS on his 2000 as his second battery. I doubt that the 2000 will run your system on a weak alt and more powerful amps.

That said, if your front battery is only resting at 12.4v, it is not fully charged. Obviously you are pounding the music too much and the weak alt is not keeping your battery charged. You either need an upgraded alt or turn down the music. There is not magic way to change the fact that you are using more power than your car produces. No battery in the world will fix that. Sooner or later it will be dead just like your current battery.

i sent you a pm buck, but back to topic, anything to do as a "temp" solution with thi dirty little ***** car without spending alot
Replied.

I am running a batcap with about 1500-1600 watts coming from my 9.1 and my gt-40 is putting out a total of about 200-240 watts. My alternator is stronger than his, but it virtually eliminated my dimming and my voltage when rpms are at 1500 doesn't drop below 13.8v if that. I do agree though that he needs to turn the music down or downgrade. He shouldn't get an alt because he is getting a new vehicle and he can't take the alt with him. With a batcap, you can.

12.4v at rest ain't normal? i though it was the standard.

i'm really looking into a temp bandaids... not a remedy, i you know what i mean. Like Buck says too, i won't be buying an 400$ alt (was quote a lot more than that a year ago) just for the fews months left on this car. And if the alt goes bad, next car will come sooner //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif I just don't want to spend anything more on that car.

I made a trip into miami beach few months ago and i was pretty much sure the car wouldn't come back //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif Now it can rest in peace and i won't be angry at all //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I am not against batteries, but if all he did was buy a battery, then he would be back here in a few weeks with a dead battery. He needs to keep them charged one way or another. Here are the options:

1) Turn down the music (no fun option)

2) Upgrade alt (expensive option)

3) Charge batteries when car is parked (cheaper and easier if car is garaged)

Now I know the OP is from Canada. He has to be careful what size battery he buys. When you are the far north, you have to have a beast of a battery to start the car on very cold days, unless it is garaged. Even then, if you went to the mall or something and the car sat outside, you still need that battery power. I would highly suggest the following:

1) Keep stock battery

2) Install diode based isolator

3) Install rear battery (Largest you can afford; HC2400/9A31/D3100/2150)

4) Buy a power supply / charger to keep the rear battery fully charged when parked

This will get you by until you can install an HO alt in your new car.

That is an excellent idea.

X, look on ebay. You can find those for not much $$$ and you can use them again.
