Car tweeters vs. home tweeters

well I won't be able to do it for about 2 weeks (going on vacation) but if you last 2 posters want I can be the guinea pig and let you know in a few weeks...or one of you can be it
LoL . Well me and my girlfriend are bringing our car to a comp on May 18 so I need to put something new in her car by then . Ill let ya know if I buy something soon .

thanks for that link...now I'll only have to look up which ones are 4ohm and weed out the rest
No need...8hm speakers can actually be better for your amps....
Facts:

  • 8 ohm drivers are more efficient when comparing similar models

  • Amps run cooler at higher impedance loads

  • Amps are not perfect machines, they put out more than half the value when you double the impedance. For example, if amp A puts out 100rms at 4 ohms, you would expect it to put out 50rms @ 8, but in fact its closer to 60-70 watts

Don't forget about higher damping factor and reduced distortion with higher impedance loads. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Gah! Silly me....

Because your car is a horrible environment for any speaker. I can do RTA on my cheap-*** computer speakers and get a smoother response than in my car.
True, but will it SOUND better //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Hope you're not serious.

I think you knew what I meant. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Half sarcastic, half serious...
FR is not the only thing that determines how good something sounds, thats subjective after all....

Right. That's why I said I hope you weren't serious. We'd be arguing in circles.

My point was that FR is much smoother overall; no anamolies to deal with such as windshield, dash, etc. You don't have to do any 'install' methods to get good imaging out the box with home setups. Not that they can't be improved upon, but right out the gate you're already facing a long road ahead.

We are on the same page //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
To the OP, throw the home tweeter in your car in the same position as your current tweeter and see how you like it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Except for the fact that if he puts an 8ohm tweeter on a passive designed for 4ohm, he'll double the crossover frequency.

He needs to use the same impedance driver the passive was designed to be used with. If the CDT tweeter was 4ohm, he needs to stick w/ 4ohm.

Don't forget about higher damping factor and reduced distortion with higher impedance loads.
Neither of which is audible, so it's a moot point.

I beg to differ. Under normal listening levels it may not be audible, but when the amp is pushed hard it can be audible.
