Alright I got a Audi cheap, and it say s that it is stuck in 2nd gear so you can't start the car. This is on a 96' Audi A4. What am I looking at a sensor, or has anyone had this problem?

I have no idea, but my guess would be a Position sensor hooked to the linkage of the car or a P/N switch.

Sorry I just realized what I did. It's an auto.

The shifter moves, and works? I mean when it ssays it is in nuetral does the car roll freely?

The shifter will shift up and down. When you put it in neutral it rolls thus this is why I think the transmition still shifts fine. It seems like it goes into neutral, but it still shows "In 2nd" on the onboard digital guage.

so its not working in drive or reverse

edit: does it not start in drive or neutral? if it does it could be your neutral safty switch which will not allow the car to start unless it is in Park or Neutral.

I talked to a machanic, this is what it sounds like to me.
