You can wire the sub to 8 ohms and that might send significantly less power to it when hooked up to that amp, but I don't know how much. A safe bet would be less than 600W RMS (that's what it puts out at 4 ohms). The other wiring option for a single 4 ohm DVC sub is to wire it to 2 ohms. At 2 ohms the amp puts out 1200W RMS, more than twice what the sub can handle. You're in the awkward predicament where the sub and amp aren't great matches. I'm in the same boat currently.

If you're adamant about the Type R, find a SWR-12D2, or a dual 2 ohm version. That way you can wire it to 4 ohms and it'll be a better match.

There a slim chance the guy selling it has the 2 ohm version and doesn't realize the difference. The only way to be sure is to check the paperwork, or stick a multimeter on one of the coils, set it to measure impedance, and see if they read out ~2 rather than ~4.
