Can anyone figure this out?

my brother installed a setup he was no longer using into my car before being deployed. i didn't get a chance to check it all out before he left for deployment. i get in an start the car and the system is playing fine. sounds real good to. as soon as I released the parking break the stereo turned off. i was in a rush to get to my job, so I didn't bother to troubleshoot right then. I get to work an set the parking break and the stereo turns back on.

wtf?

Well it's pretty obvious he hooked something up to the parking break wire. That wire is normally a ground wire so it was probably the ground for the cd player. Move it to a normal constant ground and it will be fine.

take out your head unit

trace the black wire from the harness and see where it goes

if its going to your ebrake then you need to move it to a solid piece of metal or the black wire in the wire harness that goes into the car

If you don't know how to take the radio out, don't do this yourself. You're going to spend more money repairing your screw ups than you would if you just took it to a shop right now and had them fix this for you.

The brake wire signal is a "safety" on in dash DVD players so that you can only watch the screen when the brake is on. Seems like someone mixed up that and the ground.

With the brake on can you watch movies?

Sounds like your brother punked you. He knew exactly what he was doing and how funny it is. He is probably laughing his a$$ off telling all of his army buddies that story.
