Hey were all a bunch of DIY otherwise we would'nt be here, we'd be at Best Buy getting our competition Lightning Audio Gay & Curious system installed. So is it possible to wind your own core for a high output alternator? Has anyone heard of this?

i heard about taking to a place that winds alts for you, called draco or something. but if you're going to do it yourself be sure to make some instructions for the rest of us.

It can be done but I think it's worth the money to just buy one... Google it and there is some info. What I'd do for a cheapo alt is go to an auto store, see what yours is stock (usually 60-85 amps) and they usually have a 100-115 that is bolt on and in stock... that works for most american built cars (I got my lincoln a 90 amp alt for less than 100)... also do the math before you but one.

1000W RMS mono channel

x2

------------

2000 / 13v = 153amps of draw... you'd need one of those fancy high amp alts.. but

500W RMS

x2

--------------

1000 / 13v = 76 amps getting a 115 amp alt would prob work as long as your not bumping at full volume everytime you drive with your high beams on and your all 4 power windows going up and down and the A/C on full blast //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif...

ohh and from what I read it takes $10-20 and several hours of time to rewind an alt...

What do those super high output uber expensive ones offer that a regular alt does'nt. Just seems like it would be something big for car audio enthusiasts? Anyone know a guy that works at a place that they could call and pick their brain for a 6 pack?

well the high amp alts are used for off-roading (welders, and power tools to fix your shite), emergency vehicles, car stereo of course, drag racing (more juice for the Bang part of the ****, Squish, Bang formula).... umm there are a few more random applications.... I've seen them go as high as 400amp (for emergency vehicles). Also they make alot more power at idle which is important... all they offer in the long run is more available power... if you were running 1000W RMS on a 65amp alt and 1 battery you'd get a hell of alot of dimming and such....
