Bye circuit city!

well i just started and i tried to ask in a thread that got deleted because apparently asking a real question isn't allowed in the lounge.
but i got hired, but no one will tell me what i get paid(i havent started yet, just filled out my hired paperwork and took my drug test, don't start for another week or so)... i have 5 years sales experience from electronics (AT&T wireless) to motorcycles to gym memberships to door to door, i've got a wide array of sales experience. im just curous what they start you at as long as your not a total newb
Lol how do you get hired and not know how much you're getting paid? During the interview you could have found a pleasant way to ask and especially after you found out you were hired you could've asked.

i did ask! thats what im saying, and i was told "it would be based on my experience so they couldn't give me a specific number"

CC is worthless. They revamped the local store and now it's just one big empty room with crap scattered on some gondolas. No real rhyme or reasoning to the way it's organized. No real media section to speak of. I think that's where Best Buy killed them: Media. Best buy is a great place to get DVD's, CD's, games, software etc. CC never seemed to get that part right. Not to mention EVERYONE beats their prices.

Now the internet is fixing that. People are only using stores to look at the product before they purchase it online for 3/4 of the price.
This hurts the entire 12 volt industry as far as stores and mom and pop shops go. I think its kind a shitty thing to do. By that I mean walking in, playing with the demo units and asking questions and then buying it online. For the price you are paying them, most of it is because its shipped around, and they pay people to be there to help you. If you came to me and asked almost any question, chances are I have a good answer and can thoroughly explain the reason for the answer. By buying it in a store, you leave with it THAT day, you dont need a credit card, you get a warrantee, you dont get b-stocks or refurbs, you dont have to worry about getting ripped off etc etc. Yes I'm guilty of buying things on the internet, but most of it is things I cant get locally. The internet is really hurting brick and mortar stores. It also hurts installs because of all the information available on it. Now everyone wants to do it themselves. And trust me, I can honestly say I haven't seen one car yet that was even a decent install when they did it themselves. When I do see one, I will shake their hand.

Or maybe I just feel the sting that you dont because I'm "in the industry"

well maybe you havea clue of what you are doing, good for you that you went out and learned how to install things properly.

you can and will get very ripped off in B&M stores, they're just resellers, its not like they're producing the products, the manufacturers are just allowing them to sell their products at rates which generally will vary widely from store to store, sometimes in hundreds of dollars. So strictly going by this, you can get scammed very very easily because a lot of the B&M stores aren't very capable of providing product information properly, or have knowledgeable staff who are willing to go out of their way to learn more about the products they are installing and how to do it properly.

Finding a good B&M shop who have experienced installers who can install things properly, and if they do not know how, will either tell you straight to your face, or go far out of their way and find out how to do it properly. but the people who are not simply in the business to make money, and doing it simply because they enjoy doing it, are extremely hard to find.

And it hurts installs because people want to do it themselves? Why the hell would this be an issue? Oh wait, because ill go out on a limb and say 95% of the B&M shops can't do it properly to begin with, so by people going out of their way to figure out how to do something properly so that it doesn't end up resulting in disaster that would cost them much more money in the long run is a problem?

you're a moron for making that statement, people being educated in no way shape or form is a bad thing.

The Circuit Cities near me, the car audio department looks like an afterthought. Not very nearly as many display models up and lots of blank spaces on the wall. They don't seem to have as wide of a variety of name brands to choose from in some things. Head units, they have a couple decent things. All their speakers look like crap to me. Only see one or two subs and a couple amps I like. I don't really go into the rest of the store that much but none of that really looks impressive either. Seems like more of a DVD/CD store that sells small electronics on the side.

BB car audio is set up like they're actually serious about trying to sell you something. Alpine, Pioneer, JVC, Sony, Kenwood, Panasonic, all right there to check out and play with the HUs, subs, and door speakers. If you want to sell me something you have to have lots of nice shiny name brand stuff right there for me to play with and have a stack of them ready to go when I make my impulse buy.

**** tvs i want to see some money on the spot . wtf you need tvs for. sure you could watch plenty if **** porn but money>gay porn anyday.
Well yeah, if you're poor little *****, I could see why you would want some cash without working for it.

I for one, am glad the internet is available. If I didn't have forums available to me, I would have never learned about subwoofers like DD, amps like Sundown, bargain components like the PG RSD series, and I could go on forever.

The point I am trying to make, and agree with, is that the 99.99% of the B&M shops are strictly in it for making a profit, not a quality install.

For example: I called to get pricing on installing an alarm in my 1997 Civic, and NO ONE would hook up some form of vehicle disabling. I told all of them, so you mean to tell me that on one of the most stolen cars in the US, you won't even hook up a simple starter kill... and their answer.... "It is a liability thing. We don't want to be responsible for a tow charge if that starter disable relay goes bad". Another one said "The alarm is good enough to keep your vehicle from getting stolen." Well, I have been to New Orleans and Houston, and I have seen cars being driven down the road with the alarm going off, so I tend to think that a noise making device will NOT deter a determined thief. End result: I found my wiring online and installed the alarm myself. No installer would have ever touched this because the alarm is buried so deep in the car it would have been too labor intensive to do.

Going further.... Three of the four custom shops within 10 miles from my house all push... get this.... J (freaking) L Audio for their subwoofers, whether it is for SPL, SQ, you name it, they always recommend JL Audio and they try to ram it down your throat like there is no tomorrow. Why? Because the profit margins are higher on JL Audio subwoofers! The other custom shop pushes Memphis and I am actually friends with the owner and the dude who manages that shop.

The B&M shops blame the internet for hurting them. Well, I blame their greed and unwillingness to diversify and change with the times.
